I understand that the denomination is quite high, quite higher than what we had at some point here in Canada but the approach is a bit surprising. Here at some point in 2021, some old banknotes will lose their legal tender status (which means that you can't pay anything with them but you can change them at the bank for their facial value or keep them in your collection). Here is the announcement and you get to see what those bills look like (scroll all the way down): www.bankofcanada.ca/banknotes/upcoming-changes-to-legal-tender-status-for-older-bank-notes/1000$ being the highest we ever had (and discontinued in 2000).
