I have taken over a new allotment and the ground is solid clay. So far I have cut out four small beds and bent two forks in the process. I have chucked in some spuds, added wood chip and when this malaky fizzles out I am going to turn on the sprinklers and spend the summer watching the weeds grow.
How about you guys?

Get some grass clippings and leaves if you can. No need to "work them in" ... just pile them on top ... will help with the weeds AND the clay-i-ness mess. Pull and pile any weeds on too ! Beg them from the neighbors ! The 'spuds will be happy. Wood chips are best for flowerbeds but they are better then nothing !

I turned the soil over to speed things up, but, apart from picking the potatoes in a few months, that is going to be the last time I dig the beds. I am getting ready for my declining years when I will do a little light hoeing and a lot of sitting in a deckchair drinking coffee.

sadsaakHave mulched here so much and for so long that making a furrow and throwing in the seeds and adding some serious mulch around the seedlings pretty much takes care of things. That and re-locating the raccoons who love the sweet corn. Hardest work is raking up the leaves in the fall and bagging them for garden use in the spring. Sugar and milk in my coffee please !
