www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-52284371As the lockdown started to take hold, photographer Fran Monks, like many freelancers, found her paid commissions were being postponed. But she really wanted to document this extraordinary time where so many are isolated at home and so set about using her skills as a portrait photographer. Monks began by photographing her subjects over the internet, initially with them quite close to their devices, but slowly began to realise it was much more interesting to include more of the environment in the picture. "I have to collaborate with people, asking them to position their laptop or tablet on the other side of the room while I direct them from a far," she says. "It is a really fun way to work, although bandwidth, webcams and light all present big challenges”. “I decided that I would make the final image by photographing the screen, because I like the strange artefacts which appear. Even though the images are made by layer upon layer of digital process, I enjoy the fact that the black border of the computer screen is somewhat reminiscent of a darkroom print from a negative”. ![](https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/14328/production/_111782728_200414socialdistance-6.jpg)

thats pretty interesting. it shows how creative people can get when they have new limitation imposed on them, that they didnt expect. now… what I need to come up with something I can do remote to generate income. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I did give a speech at a conference a few days ago and that was held virtually, but its not something you would get to do a few times a week plus moving from in person to remote is a downgrade for the participants so to extract some monetary value from that is also getting difficult. one of my friends is a boxing coach who also lost his job now, and he started giving boxing lessons on line, focusing on shadowing and technique. I hope it works out for him. A lot of gym workers must be really struggling now I guess. I also started to document the isolation in writing. But no money is coming out of that anytime soon ![:))](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cheesy.png) ) And I read an article about air traffic controllers and the hits/losses they are taking. And now that is plain SCARY, if they start letting people go or hiring cheaper workforce out of necessity. What about you, you are retired so no need to worry about generating income?

I’m semi-retired and spent time looking after my mum in her final years but now I’m with my brother who has learning disabilities. I was planning to look for some part-time work but now’s not the best time. Still got enough money to get by though.
