but what would you say about the acting styles. It's probably what fascinates me most about the movie, the past, present, and future of acting all in one scene. I have only seen the movie once, I just know that all of their styles meshed well in this movie. I never thought about the styles together in the way you are talking about.

I love Anatomy of a Murder but one thing I didn’t care for was Joseph Welch as the judge... I understand that his backstory was incredible but he wasn’t an actor, and that lack of experience is evident.
I agree on the generations point... Eve Arden and Arthur O’Connell represented the old guard whereas Scott/Gazzara were clearly dynamic faces of a new generation. In the middle was Jimmy Stewart saying ‘panties’, which must have seemed scandalous back then.
For the record I enjoy Ben-Hur quite a bit - although it goes on much too long- but don’t consider it worthy of recognition beyond the tech departments. Heston has the charisma to carry it but its not a role with much meat, and he’s not really craftsman enough to find hidden depths.

Ben-Hur is a rare example of a very long movie that I could have watched for another 25 minutes or so. I think the length makes sure everything in the movie can be in the movie and I think if anything was taken out it would hurt it. I was glued to the screen in a way that rarely happens with me. Aguirre, The Wrath of God is another example of this. Towards the end of the movie I was literally standing while watching it I was so drawn in by every moment.

BEST ACTRESS1. Elizabeth Taylor, Suddenly, Last Summer 2. Audrey Hepburn, A Nun's Story 3. Simone Signoret, Room at the Top
4. Joanne Woodward, The Sound and the Fury 5. Susan Cabot, The Wasp Woman BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS1. Katharine Hepburn, Suddenly, Last Summer 2. Juanita Moore, Imitation of Life 3. Lee Remick, Anatomy of a Murder 4. Marilyn Monroe, Some Like It Hot
5. Machiko Kyô, Floating Weeds For me both are lead (I can't believe I missed Signoret when I made my list, although it was arguably a 1958 film- I'll put her in, anyway) but if Signoret is lead, surely Monroe must be. Marilyn is the focus of and appears in a much larger proportion of her film than Simone.

I keep track of all my nominations as i watch the movies, but sometimes I forget. I likely went through 1959 months after I watched the movie and noticed that she won in lead. Marilyn Monroe I did consider supporting at the time I watched the movie, so I would probably agree with you if I watched Room at the Top again that Signoret is also supporting. I have no plans to watch that movie again though and will perhaps switch categories based on what you said once I am able to fill out my lead actress line-up without her. I don't really get hung up on category placement unless it is something like Ethan Hawke for Training Day. Nominating him in supporting is inexcusable category fraud. It isn't debatable in his case.

I agree that Hawke’s placement was ridiculous, along with many others over the years, but I’d personally place Monroe on the same level, with the added stipulation that she gives one of the most iconic comedy performances in American cinema, and in a brilliant movie. But fair enough! You make good reasoning. While I also consider Signoret lead, she is simply one major character who drifts in and knit of Harvey’s story. That she so sublimely walks off with the film perhaps makes her role seen larger than it is.
