Taking all his classics and semi classics and a cross section of his movies to make a diverse group of choices that should please everyone but the biggest hater.

I assume you want favorite movies, not favorite performances, so I voted for:
On Golden Pond The Grapes of Wrath The Ox-Bow Incident
...I'm surprised you didn't list Once Upon a Time in the West. I'm not a big fan, but many people are.

12 angry men, grapes of wrath, and fail safe fill the first three spots as of this post.

12 ANGRY MEN is a craftily written stage play. I never bought the idea of Juror # 8 being forward thinking, but instead the biggest control freak in the group. Sort of the way the foreman and the quiet guy on his right (I believe they're 1 and 12) felt. Still, a top piece of writing, and the propaganda is very subtle.

So the winner is TWELVE ANGRY MEN, followed by a dead heat for second between THE GRAPES OF WRATH and FAIL SAFE. Surprisingly, his monumental classics, FORT APACHE and THE OX BOW INCIDENT didn't hit the board of the top three. That's insane.
