I saw that alternate ending a long time ago.
It is still Pretty Awesome though.

I prefer it over the rather generic ending chosen up.

I didn't think it fit the tone of the rest of the movie. The screenwriter was displeased that it was changed, and the final ending is kind of...bland, it doesn't have the irony of the first and second films, but this one is too different. Might have been more fitting if Irons got a phone call in the restaurant and it was McClane doing the Simon says thing with something at the table.
"According to the DVD audio commentary, a second alternative ending had McClane and Carver floating back to shore on a makeshift raft after the explosion at sea. Carver says it is a shame the bad guys are going to get away; McClane tells him not to be so sure. The scene then shifts to the plane where the terrorists find the briefcase bomb they left in the park and which Carver gave back to them (in this version it was not used to blow up the dam). The film would end on a darkly comic note as Simon asks if anyone has a four-gallon jug. This draft of the script was rejected early on, so it was never actually filmed. The rocket-launcher sequence was the only alternative ending to be filmed."

I have never seen that before but it's nice to see a alternate ending even exists.
they should include that on all releases of the movie on DVD/BluRay etc so when playing the movie they can choose 'standard' (original) or 'alternate' (this ending)
both endings are solid but the one they went with feels more proper to Die Hard.

I think it got rejected because it was pretty dark. I like it, though. Makes sense as, by this point, McClane has lost pretty much everything.
