What film do you think most iconically defined the 1980s as a decade? In other words, when people think of the 1980s, what’s the film that you think is most likely to come to mind?

I guess we would have to go by what film gets referenced the most or turns up in popular lists. The Terminator would be a top contender. And it has a very 80s look, you couldn't mistake it for another decade. The clothes and everything. Things like shooting up the police station--discussions about mass shootings were common then too. Also the way computer tech was speeding up.
"There was this guy once, you see this scar?"

Defining movie of the 1980s OR the 1950s? Michael J. Fox Product placement Sci-fi comedy Crowd pleaser Time travel Teens Yuppy parents Spielberg involvement I think it hits the most 80's boxes for me.

That's another very 80s thing. But I guess Terminator qualifies for Rayban (and gun) promotion too. Biggest difference is the Terminator was indie, Back to the Future was big studio. Terminator also has time travel.
What if time traveling with the Delorean required one be naked too? Marty would have a lot more troubles when he arrived in 1955.

Far from my favorite but The Breakfast Club seems to capture the 80s, from the music to the attire to the social mores.

Back to the Future (1985)
I suspect that's one of the most universally liked and iconic movies of the 1980's. I can't imagine many movies challenging this one, especially from a wide appeal across a wide range of age groups etc. because what can really challenge this? ; probably some but not many especially if you exclude R rated movies so they are more watchable by a wider range of age groups. but all-in-all if I am only picking one movie that has wide appeal from the 1980's, it's definitely Back to the Future.
p.s. personally I like a fair amount of movies over that but it's wide appeal is undeniable.

But is it popularity or defining of the 80s itself? Much of BTTF takes place in 1955. Of non-R rated films it seems to be the top candidate--I would say Top Gun or Beverly Hills Cop would be other considerations but I don't think they were as popular and might be a little too niche (especially Top Gun) but if we are thinking of the 80s, does BTTF have enough 80s reference? And doesn't the Breakfast Club take place mostly in a room? Marty switches into 50s clothing after he gets hit by the car too. I think it comes down to which film gets more cultural reference since then--the Terminator or BTTF (complicated by the fact that Terminator has the sequels and Schwarzenegger had a bigger film career than Fox so it's not like we have had constant reminders of it).
Gremlins is another one. It even has breakdancing and aerobics Gremlins.
