Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Big Bully (1996) - 1.5 out of 4 stars
"Having parlayed his newly published book into an offer to teach a course at his old school, author Moranis is horrified to discover that his long unseen childhood tormentor is now the shop instructor. Comedy is so dull in the opening childhood flashbacks that it's already d.o.a. by the time Moranis and Arnold show up. Julianne Phillips disappears abruptly in the film's second half--lucky for her."

This is a movie I watched a few times as a kid. Not sure how it'd hold up.

And Rick Moranis hasn't done any acting since this film. I believe he was in that animated Disney film about bears nobody watched. This might have been his last live action movie though.

Weird dark comedy? Not sure about what movie that was set to be?
The one I have seen, seems to be a over-the-top family comedy, and a very poor one too, sadly.
Big Bully might had the potential, at least in the start, to take a serious topic and treat it with some dignity, instead they just dumbed it all down into a bunch of almost pathetic clichees and ridiculous slapstick gags, throughout most of the time, which was very painful, cause ever since I was a kid, I really liked Rick Moranis, he was a bit of a hero for me. There was not alot of Hollywood leading men wearing glasses, and since I was one of few at my school also wearing them, he instantly become one of those I looked up to.
Anyway, Moranis being invovled was probably the only reason to why I bought the film on an very overpriced DVD back in the day.
I do not hate it, but it angers me when talents is completely wasted, and if only better writers/director had taken the lead, then maybe it could have fared better.
By the way, Moranis "backing" out, I think had something to do with his wife got very ill and died, and he wanted to spend time with his kids, instead of making movies. But I have noticed he has done some voice-work in animated films and so on, so hopefully, maybe one day he might return to the movies, if the right script or film is there.

BIG BULLY (which is about 2 classmates (David Leary and Rosco "Fang" Bigger) who run into each other after 20 years and their dynamic is still the same) is clearly trying to say something about what makes kids (or even adults) want to torment others and how victims should deal with them... but the resolution is so rushed that whatever message is supposed to be conveyed gets lost. The story hinges on people not believing David's accusations against Fang, but it stops making sense after a while. A lot of the town residents knew about their history all along. Plus, there are plenty of moments where Fang does something bad (not just to David) in front of others. Rick Moranis is known for playing over-the-top geeks. Here, he gets a chance to portray a man who does fall under the "nerd" category but still has a lot of charm and wit. It might be his most well-rounded performance. Tom Arnold's? Not so much. By the way, he doesn't even have a proper cinematic entrance. His first scene starts and he's... just there. There are times where David Newman's music score would have you believe that the scene is more important than what it actually is, so it distracts. There are scenes filmed like a stalker thriller, which clash with the comedic atmosphere (there's a hilarious moment in a bar where everyone stares at David and it feels straight out of a cartoon). There's an unpredictable plot twist involving Art Lundstrum (David's neighbor) that's funny on its own and it's even funnier in retrospective because of how it comes and goes without a more detailed explanation. 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
