I quite liked the first season but I got stuck somewhere in S2 and never caught up. It was definitely better than Vikings.

I like it very much, got me the first three season on blu ray, but streaming is a no-go for me, and Netflix(?) is often opting against DVD or blu ray releases.
But being worse than Viking will be next to impossible, if you are only halfway competent in your job. This show is by now a complete train-wreck and I watch it only to finish what I've started. Gross...

I only saw the first season of Vikings, so this is what I am comparing with. I found it shallow and fast paced, never building up to anything lasting. The characters were uninteresting. The Last Kingdom felt better in this regard but the writing seemed to go the same simplifying ways by the 3rd episode of S2, with Uhtred's captivity being resolved too quickly in unconvincing ways and the whole thing becoming terribly repetitive, the main hero doing something impulsive again and having to pledge himself to the king once more. I never went past that episode.
I'll admit the single main character trope is a bit of a problem too. It's just Uhtred's show.

I rarely commit to anything without first watching the trailer and reading reviews. I find 99% of television unwatchable and maybe one movie a year worth my time. Hard to imagine how you ever find anything to watch up to your standards.
