Most movies produced by WWE Studios serve as vehicles for wrestlers. Hey, as long as they have the acting talent and as long as the story is entertaining, we can forget that we're watching a glorified commercial. THE MAIN EVENT can't even do that, because its plot revolves around a WWE tournament! When the cameos are listed in the credits, "WWE superstar" is written on top of each name! There's a magic mask that can make you super-strong and it's implied that it's connected to ancient wrestling mythology. Yes, because modern-day televised wrestling matches are veeeeery similar to their roots. A boy named Leo finds the mask and there's running gag about its bad smell. Why doesn't he just wash it? Is he afraid it might make the powers go away? I'm pretty sure ancient magic can resist water and a little detergent. Leo starts defending himself from bullies and he finally finds the courage to talk to Erica, his crush. Eventually, he becomes a local celebrity, but he lets fame go to his head, to the point where his friends don't want to hang out with him anymore. So we have 2 premises that have been done to death for the price of 1! That would be tolerable if there were surprises or new elements in order to make this double premise seem original... but no. The movie follows every single story beat we expect. At least until the climax, which made me feel I was losing braincells by the minute. You see, throughout the tournament, everyone has assumed that Kid Chaos (Leo's alias) has been an adult dwarf... even though you can see some of his facial features, which are underdeveloped. Not to mention that he doesn't have a lot of muscles, so people should at least suspect that he's cheating.

Anyway, during the last match, he realizes that Samson, his opponent, has stolen the mask. Why does he want super-strength when he already has muscles bigger than his own head? Why does the match continue after everyone has found out Leo is a child?! Why does the match continue after Samson has attacked the referee?! Both of their asses should've been disqualified! Leo's father approaches and, instead of stopping the fight, which I'm pretty sure it's within his legal rights, he reminds his son that intelligence is the best weapon. Leo makes Samson faint due to his vertigo. So... WWE it's trying to teach its young audience to use their brains rather than their muscles? That seems a little hypocritical. Also, Leo never really suffers any consequences. Isn't wearing that mask cheating, in the same way doping is? Halfway through the movie, Erica and Leo's friends find out about he's Kid Chaos (their reactions are so downplayed that keeping the secret felt like a waste of screen time) when they're at an ice cream parlor and a robber comes in. Leo throws ice cream and some objects at him and, for some reason, he never uses his gun. Leo beats him up and the police then arrests him. Doesn't what Leo did count as vigilantism? Shouldn't he be arrested too?
