I voted an '8', but might edge it up a bit to 8.2 - or ***
This is a nifty, well-plotted little sleeper-thriller with a chillingly realized lead performance. The movie knows itself well and never gets bogged down with too much ambition. Perfectly paced and suspenseful throughout, also with a very likable Jill Schoelen as the teenage heroine. Shelly Hack is not bad here and more believable than she was on CA. A modest gem.

I give it a 6. It is a nifty little thriller that does manage to deliver the goods in most aspects. I do get annoyed though, that that young dude spends most of the films runtime tracking the stepfather down, only to confront him and then get bumped off quicker than one can swat a fly. It made it seem like his character was just superfluous padding. I get what you're saying about the subplot with the brother in law being superfluous padding, I thought this myself when I watched it earlier today. I don't know. I would never give this movie ****. And yet there is something kind of perfect about this movie within the conventions of its genre. And part of those conventions would seem to necessitate the subplot. Subplots can add a little something extra and in this case, the extra plotting of the young guy finding his clues and putting two and two together is just fun. It adds a little spice. Also, it seems to me that this movie has expert pace. I don't usually analyze the pacing of a movie because I'm not very confident about that aspect. But in this case, it just feels like everything falls into place just as it should.
