I was thinking about each character's series, and it's overall impact to the MCU and quality, and it occurred to me, that Iron Man of all characters, after being THE character to start the MCU with a bang, and carry it, often in tandem with Captain America, might be surpassed by nearly everybody else.
Think about it. Captain America clearly has the better series. I don't even see how it's debatable, with a solid opening, Winter Soldier, and Civil War. Yes Tony was key in the last film, but I'm just talking about comparing the named series together.
How about Guardians of the Galaxy? The first film was film was amazing, and although I haven't seen the second it has an 88 on RT so far, and on top of that it has introduced Infinity Stones, the Nova Corps, Ego, and apparently Adam Warlock is coming eventually. Iron Man's series hasn't had near that level of impact on the larger story, not to mention GOTG seems likely to out rate the IM series.
Thor is a much closer comparison, and Iron Man seems likely to out rate Thor overall, but that seems to be mostly on the scores of Iron Man 1 alone, which, while a great film, was very simple in nature and didn't expound upon the MCU as a whole very much like Thor's introduction of Asgard, Loki, Hela, Planet Hulk, and at least one Infinity Stone that we know of. In all seriousness, the Thor films would have to be considered higher in the required viewing to understand the MCU list.
Doctor Strange is off to a great start. I have no idea where it's going but there are opportunities to have major stories with Scarlet Witch, Mephisto, Dormammu, Mordo, Nightmare, the Mandarin perhaps, and quite a few others, on top of some Illuminati business, so this is a series to really look forward to.
Spiderman? Well the first film isn't even out yet, so let's just pass for now. And the same with Panther and Captain Marvel which we know even less about. Each of these characters though, has major potential that could easily become far more important and more interesting than the entirety of the Iron Man series.
Ant Man? Now this one the jury is completely out on. I have no idea where this series is going and what impact it might have. The first one was a solid funny film and if that's the extent of it's impact, honestly that's awesome. I had a great time with Ant Man and would love to see more, even if it's never more than a fun solo adventure. But we'll see. It does have some potential for awesome, I just have no idea what to predict.
But overall, I just found it interesting that as popular as Iron Man is, within his own series, he's positioned to have some of the least impact.
What do you think?
