Well, technically it's tomorrow, but whatever. 20 years since Ridley Scott's Roman epic was released. Did you see it at the time? What did you think and does it still hold up today? I rewatched it last night after not having seen it in at least 15 years or so. While I was unquestionably entertained, and while there's no doubt the battle/fight sequences were terrific, and while no one can argue against the quality of the acting (Joaquin Phoenix, Richard Harris, and Russell Crowe in particular), there seemed to be something missing in the script. For an historical epic, most of the characters didn't seem very well fleshed out, or particularly rich. That said, still an engrossing watch; my #3 Ridley Scott movie behind Alien and Blade Runner.

It's perfectly enjoyable for what it is but not a keeper. I never thought about watching it again. Terrible pantomime performance by Joaquin Phoenix, surprisingly memorable swan-song for Olly Reed. 6/10

I saw it at the cinema at the time and found it pretty dull (I rarely enjoy those types of films, I had a similar reaction Spartacus, Braveheart and Troy). I can't imagine ever watching it again by choice.

Ridley Scott's #1 movie hands down! my most recent re-watch of it was Dec 2018. it's within my Top 39 movies. p.s. but I think Braveheart (1995) is the cream-of-the-crop of these types of movies. Gladiator is my #2 spot. JamesDamn, you been living under a rock? (no offense) I think I first seen that probably not all that long after it came out on video or thereabouts.

Saw it in theaters back in 2000. It still holds up, even if it isn't particularly deep. The cinematography, the score, the performances; just the epic scale of it all covers up the fact that it isn't particularly deep. It's one of my favorite Scott films. Can't believe it's been 20 years.

I saw it in a theater back then. I probably still have the ticket stub? I just re-read my review that I wrote back then, and I described the film as "an enjoyable mess". I remember thinking the film would to be a direct copy of The Fall of the Roman Empire, but it was all just a mess.
And yes, Joaquin was terrible in it.
No idea why people voted it as the best film of the year.

I'm a huge fan. It's a wonderfully made film with many great scenes. I'm a little shocked that 2 people on this thread have used the word terrible to describe Joaquin's performance. That should have been his first Oscar win in my opinion.

It's one of my favorite historical epic films. It was an amazing, well-stacked cast with a standout performance from Joaquin Phoenix. The battle and fight sequences were thrilling to watch. Hans Zimmer's score is one of my favorites from him. Aside from this, unless you are a Roman historian, the historical inaccuracies will frustrate you.

Don't like the film but I have the dvd. Not sure if its "any port in a storm" or there are just enough things in it that make it watchable now and then. The script is bad, old timer actors are wasted, the orange cinematography is irritating, but I planned to check it out again this year. BARABBAS has the best re-creation of arena combat I have seen--captures the violent pandemonium reported to have existed (except the bestiality theater), with weird devilish mascots running around the gladiators.

Not as good as The Fall of the Roman Empire (deals with Commodus' reign), but a good film. I think I remember hearing about a rumored sequel although I don' know how that would work out.

Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Gladiator (2000) - 3 out of 4 stars
"Impressive tale from the days of the Roman Empire, with Crowe as a dedicated soldier who refuses to transfer his loyalty to the new emperor Commodus (Phoenix) and suffers the consequences, winding up a gladiator in the Roman Colosseum. Crowe is so good in his Academy Award-winning performance--and his character so compelling--that one is willing to forgive the story lulls; the spectacle is grand, but the opening battle scene stresses chaos over coherence. Oliver Reed's last film; he died during production. Also won Oscars for Best Picture, Costume Design, Sound and Visual Effects."
