Who are some characters who returned for a sequel whose appearance ultimately feels forced/gratuitous even though it's nice to see the character again?
For example:
Jeff Goldblum (Ian Malcolm) - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Dick Thornburg - Die Hard 2 Sheriff J.W. Pepper - The Man with the Golden Gun

Malcolm felt more forced and gratuitous to me in The Lost World. Hammond couldn't stand the guy, now he's sending Malcolm on his whacky hippie mission, even resorting to manipulation? And Malcolm hates the dinosaurs even more than Hammond hates Malcolm, so cui bono? Not to mention repurposing Malcom as an action lead makes him feel almost like a different character entirely.

Bill Pullman in Independence Day Resurgence. There was no need for him at all and the speech they gave him to rekindle the greatness of the original was downright cringeworthy and embarrassing.

Simply feeds into my fanfiction that James Bond is an alias, passed down from each subsequent 007.

Michael Crichton: "The check cleared, what more do you want from me?"
...honestly I like the movie better than the book.

Never. It’s always nice to see a character return. Hell there are some sequels where I feel they easily could have used a previous established character instead of making up a new one

I don't know what that has to do with my post to be honest. Fwiw, his appearance in the book is even more gratuitous considering he died in the first one.

Akane Yashiro from Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla shows up for a few seconds in Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. just to say she's leaving to train in the United States.

Jabba the Hutt (and Boba Fett for that matter) in the Special Edition Star Wars IV. It was fine before the revisions and felt gratuitous.

Serge, Bronson Pinchot, in Beverly Hills Cop 3 (1994) but I like him in it. Also he was really supposed to return in the sequel (1987).

John Saxon in Elm Street 3. His role serves little purpose and Saxon gives his most uninspired performance ever. It's so obvious that he couldn't care less about being in this sequel.
All returning characters in Doctor Sleep, simply put this movie should have never been made. Really shitty fanfic writing that doesn't understand anything about what made Kubrick's film work.

You know the Shining and Doctor Sleep were novels written by Stephen King right?

Hey moron, Doctor Sleep was a terrific movie and was based on a novel by Stephen King himself. It's about as fucking far away from fan fiction as you can get.
