If I personally think of Charles Durning as the consummate character actor, M. Emmet Walsh isn't far off (though he can't dance like Durning). One of Walsh's greatest supporters was film critic Roger Ebert who felt he could pretty much do it all.
Do you have any special memories of M. Emmet Walsh?
"He hates these cans!"
Thanks.

I think it's safe to say that M. Emmet Walsh stole the show in Blood Simple as the slimy private investigator. Great in every scene he was in.
And he was memorable in Slap Shot as sports journalist Dickie Dunn. So funny when he says to the Hansons "I tried to capture the spirit of the thing" and they just glare at him.

It has always seemed unfair that Walsh's great performance in Blood Simple came along years before the Coens found favour with the Academy. To me he is far more memorable than Javier Bardem in NCFOM. A great performance, really which would surely have been Oscar nominated had the film been released 15-20 years later.

I did not really know him by face until "Blood Simple". Before that I used to get him confused with J.T.Walsh, who had a similar sort of career.
