Or an uncircumcised male? Many pro-science internet atheists claim the two are "uncomparable", and I suspect most of them aren't familiar with either one.

A circumcised female would be fairly incomparable to an uncircumcised male, yes - at least as far as the naughty bits are concerned. Did you mean circumcised male?

There are many different forms of female genital mutilation, and only one type is actually analogous to male circumcision. But it is promoted as "normal" and preferable by the practitioners and recipients of it in a similar way that male circumcision is promoted in the United States, the Philippines and South Korea.

The only difference would be taste.

I'm pretty sure anyone who's ever had a baby has seen an "uncircumcised male". If you are referring to adult men, well I'm in the military and between boot camps and deployments, I've seen a lot of naked guys. So yeah, I've seen plenty of both kinds.

Dammit.. I knew I should have waited for a better post to do a "taste" joke.

It's just a question of how competent and educated the person making the comparison is on each issue. For example, I can compare radical Christianity to radical Islam.

Heck, I could compare a neutrino to peanut butter.

Yes I have seen both and yes you cannot compare the two Anything can be "compared" to anything else. It's just a question of how competent and educated the person making the comparison is on each issue. For example, I can compare radical Christianity to radical Islam. Whilst I realise you can compare anything to anything in the context of this OP the two are not comparable.

tpfkar It's a figure of speech, peeps. I could care less about your prescriptivism.A very stupid one, particularly in this case where a comparison between various types of genital mutilation is totally appropriate.

Care to elaborate on that? Because I can give you a litany of ways they can be compared. So in what context (according to you) can they NOT be?

tpfkar What's stupid is arguing with English. All it is in this case is the opinion that they are very different. Everyone wants to understand art. Why not try to understand the song of a bird? ...people who try to explain pictures are usually barking up the wrong tree.

Why not try to understand the song of a bird? ...people who try to explain pictures are usually barking up the wrong tree. The entire point is stupid in this context as the fact that they are different isn't disputed by anyone. Males are different than females just as cooking chicken is different than cooking vegetables. But both males and females may be subjected to painful, medically unnecessary, genital modifications against their will, just as cooking chicken and cooking vegetables both involve cooking. So one may have an opinion that two things are "different" all they want. But to say they cannot be compared is asinine when in most respects relevant to the topic THEY CAN! I agree with you that it's stupid to argue English, but nobody is actually doing that. What you are doing is defending is the clumsy use of English in a very figurative way in order to bolster an opinion about a specific topic.

tpfkar For crying out loud, I don't give a rat's ass about your crusade, it's no skin off my nose. But you really screwed the pooch trying to make some hay over some overliteral interpretation of a common English idiom that is not meant to be taken literally, and it makes you come off so half-baked that it's hard to keep a straight face. Were you born yesterday? It was perfectly by-the-book English and fit the bill for "a far cry from", regardless of how much cocksure swagger you pour on it, so knock it off as you're wasting your breath. bugger me
