collider.com/logan-black-and-white-theatrical-release/#imagesFor release on May 16 only and limited to the USA Are black-and-white versions becoming a new release platform for action movies now? Given the taut drama which characterized LOGAN, this seems like a very suitable artistic version of the film. I remember the series of gorgeous black and white portraits/imagery released by Mangold prior to the cinema release of LOGAN.

Interesting sidelight from James Mangold, from a filmmaking point of view.

Are these black and white releases the same as simply turning down the colour on your tv?

one might worry that this would undercut the explicit violence.

I don't see what the big deal is with this B&W version they keep talking about. Having seen the movie I honestly don't see how B&W would make the movie better in any way. If anything color helps the movie because you want to see the blood in red and you want to see the mutant's powers in color.
In the case of Sin City that was different because it wasn't just B&W, but also stylized FX imagery, which Logan wasn't.

Woahhh, that is awesome! I can totally imagine Logan being black&white just like classic westerns. So can I. I can also imagine Gangster Squad in black& white like old school gangster pictures.

What I'm curious of is whether this is black and white like old-school movies or black and white like Sin City.

LOGAN is considered different from other movies in the franchise for many reasons. Two reasons mentioned by many is the western vibe ( the lonely and maybe aging gunfighter theme who affects the people he comes in contact with) and the noir vibe ( the air of melancholy as he is aging and takes care of his mentor, the road in front of them possibly away from others in a sunseeker, the dark background from where X-23 came from, and the uneasy relationship between father and clone daughter) both make it a good candidate for a film format that does away with (almost) distracting color. I think we saw a glimpse of it when we saw the series of black and white images captured by Mangold himself on his camera which were uploaded while they were filming and which gave us a glimpse of a more emotional depth to the film.
Re the action scenes -- Mangold has admitted on twitter that the monochromatic version is less gory --
but think of the stronger characterization ( with all the emotional connotations of a film noir) and the stark imagery that we may see. It seems it is going to be like another Director's Cut in a home video ( even if Mangold says the movie itself is the Director's Cut) and comes together with the BluRay and HD releases.
Too bad that the cinema screening is going on very limited release, in only a few places and for one screening only on May 16. Interestingly, Mangold has replied to a tweet that while at the moment the release is limited ( mostly in Texas, probably because that is where it took place during the first act of the movie), he is working on something while not promising anything. He said they had no way of gauging the possible reaction to it and was quite surprised at the interest shown in LOGAN NOIR.

Not sure if this is an official image or fan-made but it is beautifully illustrated ( we will have to imagine that the red pigment disappears in the monochromatic version of the film ) --

Black and white doesn't make a film noir though does it. Look at all those black and films that, you know, aren't noirs.

why? Saw it the week it opened and it was one of my top movies of the year. I have no desire to see this. Just a marketing gimmick for the Blu-ray release.

In case you're interested -- there will be a Q&A with Mangold and Jackman shortly, after the one-night screening of LOGAN NOIR ( they will be physically present at AlamoDrafthouse in Brooklyn) --
