Which actors/actresses/directors seem to follow this pattern the most when it comes to their movies? A lot of people claimed Guillermo del Toro followed this pattern particularly early in his directing career with big budget studio fare followed by more intimate personal projects. Francis Ford Coppola only agreed to make Godfather Part II if the studio allowed him to make The Conversation and then Apocalypse Now!

"One for me, One for the studio"

Didn't Tim Burton follow this pattern for a while? Maybe even still does?
For every commercial movie he did (Batman, Batman Returns, Planet of the Apes, Disney remakes, etc.) he would follow up with something less commercial (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Big Fish, Big Eyes, etc.)

Sean Connery. He did Diamonds Are Forever so he could do The Offence with Sidney Lumet. (He was also supposed to do a version of Macbeth, but it was never made.)
Christopher Nolan. He practically did Batman Begins and The Dark Knight just so he could do Inception.

I don't know if it's literally the case, but Fincher often follows up his kinda niche movies with something more mainstream. Se7en and The Game. Fight Club and Panic Room. Zodiac and Benjamin Button.
