I haven't had TV for fourteen years. The show is in its third season but Star Trek fan reviews on YouTube are pretty much negative. It seemed like a very cool idea, but apparently something has gone wrong with the execution. It reminds me of when I was still allowed to post on the Politics board and I did a thread with a Mark Dice video in which he explains why he is no longer a Star Wars fan. It's not the same Star Wars anymore. It has morphed. alpha128? Anyone?

I thought the first two episodes were lackluster, and the third one was an improvement, but not great. My friend continued to watch it, and during one visit he played for me a scene from a later episode - a big space battle that he thought was impressive. Perhaps that's your answer right there. My friend is easily impressed by spectacle and high production values, while I am more interested in writing, characters, and storytelling than special effects.

I watched most of the first season but I had to stop, it was getting so bad.
The only decent actor/character was the Captain
The main character is a bore. The depiction of the Klingons was just strange.
None of the supporting actors/characters were interesting. They tossed in a same sex relationship and that was boring, too.

Discovery is essentially a reboot of the franchise, regardless of what the creators claim. It combines the look and production standards of the newer movies with some of the lore from old Trek and mixes it up with a Battlestar Galactica-type tone and plot. It's Star Trek, but not in the traditional, conventional sense. Too much focus is devoted to the lead character - who is only moderately interesting to begin with - and little attention is given to the wider cast and crew, many of whom are themselves rather bland.
It's also not particularly well written and seems to reinvent itself every half-season. Season 2 may as well be a completely separate series. And it seems as if Season 3 takes the show in yet another totally different direction. I kind of like it, but it's a show that should be judged largely on its own terms and not compared with classic Trek.
