I thought I would see what other people thought on this. I don't watch modern wrestling regularly but I try to keep up with what is happening and watch some clips. I am not singling out any one promotion, but it does seem that somewhere along the line in recent years, it became the number 1 goal of some wrestling promotions to make people laugh.

I don't mind comedy as long as it doesn't start to take over the main event scene, like what happened at MITB, when Otis won the briefcase.

If I had stuck with the product up until that point, that ridiculous match most likely would've been the last straw and I would've quit watching after that.

I like a nice balance, if possible. I think some wrestlers have a flair for comedy while some are better at straight wrestling.
But I don't like weakly scripted gags. I think that's what's killing WWE nowadays, they need a new creative writing team. I also dislike the soap opera segments in any promotion - gimme comedy over that any day of the week.

I think the difference is that in the past there was comedy that was done but it was all designed to lead to something serious or something that will draw money. Like people paying to see somebody getting tarred and feathered and all that. Where now there is comedy in matches that do nothing but make everybody in the match look stupid and has no function other than to get a temporary giggle from the audience. It is counterproductive. The silly backstage comedy skits I guess they figure it is good for ratings. I am one of the people that stopped watching the product many years ago because I couldn't stand the backstage comedy skits and the silliness. Among a few other reasons.

Ten years ago it wasn't so bad when the biggest comedy wrestler was Colt Cabana but not with all these Chikara making it onto TNT it's gotten a lot worse.
