Shelley Duvall in THE SHINING.Who would you not have nominated instead? Casey Affleck, he was great on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford but he wasn’t supporting, so he should have been nominated for Best Actor Paul Dano would have been my runner-up out of the nominated performances. Javier Bardem's win I agree with. Leaving Affleck's category fraud aside I would have replaced Tom Wilkinson.

I just rewatched A Few Good Men and Wolfgang Bodison inspired me to revive this thread. He's not necessarily BAD, but this is a juicy part a real actor could have devoured. Instead Reiner gives the role to his non-acting assistant, and he's just kinda stiff and mediocre. Others: Patrick Fugit - Almost Famous Bee Vang - Gran TorinoDaniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Katie Holmes - Batman Begins Quentin Tarantino - any of his movies, but particularly Django Patricia Arquette - True Romance I also find Billy Zane kinda bad in Titanic, but in a delightful way. It's like he's in a completely different, much campier movie. The greatest example imo.

Brian Cox in Manhunter. No wonder they remade it I am not big on his performance either, or Tom Noonan's for that matter. My favorite performances in Manhunter are from Joan Allen and Stephen Lang. Trying to be unbiased is difficult though, because Hopkins is my favorite performance of all-time and I saw The Silence of the Lambs first and it is my favorite movie. I get that Cox is going for subtle, but it is too subtle. You understand Graham;s anxiety because of what we know about their past, but if it wasn't for that knowledge we would have no idea why he is so afraid of this guy. It is also just an uninteresting performance. I want to feel how Graham is feeling in the scene and Brian Cox and the directing of them during the scene doesn't do anything for me in that regard.

What was wrong with Noonan? Hasn't he kind of made a career off of giving that same performance over and over? Did you the watch the Hannibal TV series?

Mainly the scene with Stephen Lang, I just don't buy him in that scene. It is my least favorite performance from him, even though he has given similar performances. He has just give similar performances better. I watched a few episodes of the Hannibal show but couldn't stand the lead and don't care much for Mads as Lecter. I watched some clips of Michael Pitt as Mason Verger and liked from what I saw of that though. it helps that I am a big fan of Michael Pitt in general though. I am a fan of Mads in general, but moreso when he isn't playing villains. I have that same issue with Mark Strong.

Interesting, because the guy playing Will Graham is my favorite thing about the show. I think the character is more compelling in that than either movie. Did you ever watch David Fincher's Mindhunter? Groff's character is based on the real life agent who inspired the Graham character. I think the only non-villainous Mads performance I've seen is The Hunt. I don't know if it's just his accent, but he has this marble-mouth mumbling thing that starts to grate on me. Otherwise I thought he was fine, but no Hopkins. And yeah, I always like Michael Pitt, although unfortunately he got recast as Mason after the face/off.

Yep, you didn't really get an aura of menace from Cox's interpretation that you did from Hopkins. It felt like he was phoning it in whereas after meeting Hopkins' Lecter you'd probably want to jump in the shower as soon as you got home. Obviously Cox played the role before first but it's impossible to imagine anyone other than Hopkins as Lecter (I'm only counting the movies- as much as I like the series, it's a reimagining and a completely separate entity)

Perhaps if I kept going with the show he would have grown on me. My favorite between the other 2 is Peterson, though I have this problem where I am just not much of a fan of him in general. Norton on the other hand is one of my favorite actors, but he is sort of doing the bare minimum in Red Dragon. I used to prefer Norton in the role but after a handful of re-watches of both movies I like Peterson better. And yeah, I know Michael Pitt is difficult to work with. I assume that is why he was recast. He was great in Reptile (2023).

Agree completely on Norton. Haven't seen that. I've liked him since Bully, though.

Also while not a great movie by far Lori Singer is really bad in Warlock while Richard E. Grant and Julian Sands are on fire
