One of the shelves on my wall fell off and bonked my head and cracked me screen to where it's unusable. Thankfully the computer still works I just had to connect it to my TV with an HDMI cord. It helps a lot too that I got a wireless mouse and a bluetooth keyboard.

I have the same problem with my best laptop. The hinge on one side is broken, I can't close it but it works. It hasn't been dropped. Good old HP's I love them.

Mine's a HP too and it has served me well. Is yours a 17 inch? Mine is and they do have hinge problems. They continue to use hinges that can not support the weight that a 17 inch computer has. I guess they just don't want to make hinges just for those computer sizes. I just leave mine open now. Thank God I don't need to travel with it.

Yeah, I don't know how anyone can use wired mouses as wireless is a must if you ask me as the cord gets annoying on wired mouses. but my keyboard is wired which is not a problem as it's not like I move that any major distance from the computer and it's not like one moves a keyboard much, if at all, in general.
I just use some basic/cheap keyboard mouse... Logitech K120 keyboard (I had this in use since Aug 2011 and they are cheap but good as it's only about $10-13. I take it apart once in a while to clean the main plastic keys in the kitchen sink with old toothbrush and dish soap) and a Logitech M510 wireless mouse (I use re-chargeable batteries in the wireless mouse since they won't leak like regular alkaline batteries do etc).
in fact, earlier this month I can't believe the 'back button' on the M510 mouse actually broke off (where the main plastic flexes inside of the mouse) and I had to take it apart and luckily I fixed it as I had to use some plastic weld to glue the plastic that snapped back together and after waiting 24 hours I installed it and it was still not working as the plastic on the switch was not reaching/or fully depressing the switch inside of the mouse. so what I did was use a couple of tiny pieces of cardboard cut from a Philips Norelco shaver packaging I got stacked together and wrapped it in some clear tape and stuck it over the top of the switch and taped it to the side of the switch. so basically it fills the gap (it raises it so the switch can be pressed) and the back button now works again (so far so good in the 11 days it's been fixed. but if anything fails it will almost certainly be the glue on the plastic). but while I had it apart I noticed the mouse wheel can be completely removed from the mouse which pops into a plastic holder clip and I removed that and thoroughly cleaned it with dish soap/water and reinstalled that. I had that mouse since I think sometime in 2015 as I am surprised that mouse back button broke as I never had that happen before in any mouse I used over the years. but other than the back button issue, which is currently fixed, the mouse still works well.
but anyways... I got my PC connected to my PC monitor and TV through 20' HDMI cable as this way I can use my monitor in general but when I want to watch something, like a movie, ill drag it over to the TV side and play it full screen.
but nowadays you can probably get a solid replacement monitor for around $100 as I have had my ASUS VW246H monitor for a little over 10 years now and I paid something like $220-230 (it was over $200) back in I think early 2010 (Feb 2010 off the top of my head). I run the monitor brightness at 50% which may extend the life of it and it's easier on the eyes vs full brightness as full brightness is too bright.

It still works good. I won't buy another one like it.

I ended my broken hinge problem by buying another computer.
