How could they have gone wrong with another Judi Dench picture?

It seems like something twenty years too late;not that it'd qualify as good back in the 2000s. Maybe they should have made it a tv series. Kind of like A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Dame Judy Dench is a jinx. She should retire. That way she can hang with her biker friends more often.

Since the beginning of ARTEMIS FOWL resembles a lot of fantasy movies (a boy discovers something magical/supernatural after the death/kidnapping of their parent/legal guardian), it's only natural to assume that the rest of the movie will follow the formula. Does the title character go on a long journey to defeat the villain? Nope. He stays at home for most of the running time while certain creatures visit him. It's honestly hard to tell if this is a deconstruction of the tropes or a sincere and failed attempt at following the genre conventions. Either way, the plot that we get is quite uneventful. I understand replacing the clichΓ© of the young protagonist who gazes in awe at every new experience with someone who's always confident about being in control of the situation, but Artemis just isn't very interesting. And his friendship with Holly Short (an elf) is very rushed. Without getting into spoilers, there's a scene where a character is briefly believed to be dead. The exact same thing happens for a second time! 10 minutes later! Most of the shot compositions don't really make sense. There are a couple of times where the camera movements enliven an otherwise standard scene, but they're the minority. For the most part, they make the action sequences hard to follow. So does Matthew Tucker's editing. Due to all these problems with Kenneth Branagh's directing and with Hamish McColl and Conor McPherson's script, the actors can't do much. Judi Dench's performance is terrible, but Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad and Nonso Anozie manage to shine once or twice. 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.Razzies avoided , or do they make a streaming exception this year for intended for theater films It's being discussed.
