I was reading about him earlier, because I was curious if he were actually a colonel lol.
He was a savvy businessman. Really interesting guy.
That seems like a low amount of money. $16.5 million? Now KFC is all over the world.
It's like McDonald's. They're not in the hamburger business... they're in the real estate business.

He also bought a motel and redesigned the model to make it family friendly. Then he let his mistress stay there for free. He lost it all when Big Gumberment built a freeway nearby.

I’ve noticed KFC now has the original ‘Kentucky Fried Chicken’ name spelt out in full on its boxes/wrappers. I wonder what the deal is behind that.

I remember hearing that Col. Sanders sold KFC for $4 million. Some people thought it was too low of a price.

I remember hearing that Col. Sanders sold KFC for $4 million. Some people thought it was too low of a price. sometimes you get out when you can or you don't... i heard there was a very popular custom PC gaming company here in Virginia IIRC. it was all over the computer magazines in the 90s. so popular and well rated in fact that dell offered to buy their name for $10m. the guy who owned it thought it was low. his bankers thought it was low. pretty much everyone thought - $10m? that's chump change from Dell. do you know where that guy is now? NOT SWIMMING IN $10m... instead Dell later bought Alienware to be their gaming division who benefited from that guy's decision not to sell.

on the flip side, the McDonalds brothers had no interest in expanding.
In retrospect many might believe Kroc ripped them off. But in reality we all wouldn't know McDonalds at all unless we lived near one of their few restaurants back in the day.
I thought everyone knew Rocky Rococo's pizza, til discovering it was a small regional chain and hadn't gone nationwide.

Here is Colonel Harlan Sanders in a 1950s episode of What's My Line. The panel didn't know his name or face back then.

it's true. some people take things as far as they can and then let it go in hopes it can go farther. not to mention $2-4m in 1964 was BIG money. the average salary was $4500, average home price was $21,000! it is all relative.

Wasn't Dave Thomas one of those 'Colonel' graduates before going off on his own with his idea for Wendy's? (Sorry, Atlanta)

This quote is for CynicalDreamer2 from Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948)
Jim Blandings: It's a conspiracy, I tell you. The minute you start they put you on the all-American sucker list. You start out to build a home and wind up in the poorhouse. And if it can happen to me, what about the guys who aren't making $15,000 a year?
