Who's with me. Social media wasn't around back then so Andre was an 'attraction'. All I hear about are his early days lucha libre skills. I've yet to find them. No. Big Show. Vader. Bigelow. Those were agile 'big men'. Andre? Grab hair. Head butt. Chop. Punch. Body Slam Occasional hip toss. Repeat. Great formula. If he was Giant Gonzalez and The Great Khali he'd be getting roasted. We love to put our fictional heroes on a pedestal. And Andre in my eyes was placed on a pedestal because he was an attraction before social media and the first true 'giant'. Who's with me? Thoughts? Discuss.

It was a very different time back then. I don't think you would truly understand unless you where around at that time.
Its true he was very limited in the ring and I do believe if he started in this modern era he would be viewed in similar vein to the likes of Khali or Gonzalez.
But back in the early 80s no one had seen anyone that looked like him before.. nowadays everyone is aware of 'giants' in terms of wrestling.. while its still an attraction its not an unbelievable sight as it was in those day.... you have to take this into account before comparing to those giants of this day and age.
And in all honesty Big Show is just a freak of nature... 10-15 years ago he was insanely agile for his size... he still is even now... I cant remember of any other wrestlers who suffered from gigantism to be even half as agile as Big Show.
And Vader and Bigelow didn't suffer from gigantism... so that's not a fair comparison.. of course its impressive someone of their size and weight doing the stuff they did.. but they weren't suffering from a crippling disease.

Everyone loved his hair back in the '80s.

Sports entertainer. Andre's mere presence was entertaining for the people. You seem to be rating him on something people don't really say was his claim to fame: agility. No one says he was some incredibly agile big man. I don't know who's telling you about his early lucha libre skills, but they're just messing with you.
Andre was an attraction. That is his legacy.

That is his legacy. pretty much a trolloping oaf larger than life and the 1st giant? agreed. i hear the love from some - listen to some shoots about he was a horrible guy (rip) - hey we all have skeletons in our closet. i just never 'got it' - as far as the love and admiration as the 'greatest giant'. maybe he 1st but far from the greatest in my eyes. i actually think circa 'Mania 3 he should have been given the strap. build up a 2 year or so dominant title reign. think about it - who in reality could have beaten the guy? you then build up hogan, warrior, savage as the ultimate underdog knocking him off. missed opportunity in my eyes i'm thinking if he was around today he'd be given a dancing gimmick with enzo spittin' some rhymes before he's delegated to jobbing to fandango

Basically a special attraction kind of guy. Ofcourse his matches weren't anything special, but he always drew money though

He was, from what I understand, a traditional journeyman wrestler, smart enough to move around frequently so he was always in demand everywhere he was and everywhere he wasn't. He was shrewd enough to know a large part of his own act was novelty and excitement. In the business aspect of pro wrestling he was super successful.

Yeah that's true. I've seen him in almost all the major territories. He'd come in and do shots. Vince Sr. took care of all his bookings and got him booked all over the place and loaned him out. A guy like that would be a draw anywhere.

It's a tough life he led though being that size and not even being able to fit in a car like normal people and other things like that. From what I hear, if he didn't like you you were in trouble.

The guy had charisma, could move around the ring, and wrestle just as well in the style of the time.
