Personally, I think that distinction belongs solidly to the seventies.

I think that distinction belongs solidly to the seventies. Indeed.

Despite all my love for oldschool flicks, I would say 2010's.

I agree with the 70s, Last House on the Left, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I Spit on Your Grave, etc., RAW was the WORD. Today's movies aren't all that disturbing as just cop out gory 'torture porn', not the same thing.

I agree with the original poster. I find '70s horror disturbing.

Have to agree with the '70's, into the very early '80's. Lots of "disturbing" movies coming out of Italy during that era.

Personally, I think that distinction belongs solidly to the seventies. 1970's by far. Even the made for tv movies of the 70's were disturbing. The 80's was the funnest decade for horror though.

The 70s for me also. Something about the rawness of some of those films. Hell, even a lot of the non-horror flicks from that decade are unsettling.

70s probably...but I'd say the 2010s have been pretty decent so far.

70's
However, I've always theorized what would happen if you took, say "The Conjuring" back to the 1950's, in full color and surround sound.

The 2000s/2010s are easily the most disturbing for me. So many films these days try very hard to make you squirm by showing very graphic violence. I can handle the 1970s Italian films much more easily.

While I agree the 70s is disturbing, mostly for films like I Spit on Your Grave and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the 60s is the most disturbing for me. That's the era of PSYCHO, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, BLOOD FEAST, TWO THOUSAND MANIACS, ROSEMARY'S BABY, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC...and you can't get any more disturbing than that.
