because of my slant eyes. Or better yet, telling me that I don't understand English before I get a chance to open my mouth. Or asking me "Do you speak English?" followed by "Do you speak English well?" Or, after I tell them which country I was born in, responding with "Your English is so good."
I'm also sick of Chinese people suddenly assuming that I don't understand Chinese languages after I tell them how much time I've spent in certain locations, even after I've had the entire conversation in Mandarin. Just can't win.

When they ask you if you understand English, say “no, I don’t.” ![](https://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-smugbert.gif)

People asking questions like that is not "racist".
it's not unreasonable people think the way they do because if someone appears foreign, it's easy to see why many would think that way. I doubt it's anything personal.

Next time, say "yeah that's why I'm ignoring you."

I had a German language teacher when I lived in Germany who asked me if English was my second language. I was flabbergasted and the whole class fell silent in shock. No one liked her and we named her Frau Hitler. She was a temp while the permanent teacher had yet to take hold of his position as he was still out of country.

I taught school for the Dept of defence in germany. We had German language teachers. Is this the system you were in loof? The german teachers thought our 'Army brats' weren't smart . They were quite arrogant and somewhat mean to my kids. We were told to leave the room while the German teachers were teaching but after a few stories from my kids I stayed in the classroom. I think it helped. The kids were treated better. Sorry for your experience.

I am not sure how asking somebody if they speak a langues is racist. They could just, you know, speak to somebody in that language and make an assessment from there.

The teacher we were waiting for was still in California at the Presidio in Monterey, as you might well know is where the Defense Language School is located at. He was a middle age German national, had a more European accent, and was a cool teacher. *He was also a local to the region and spoke Schwabisch.

"The german teachers thought our 'Army brats' weren't smart . They were quite arrogant and somewhat mean to my kids." About that. I just remembered, within the first week, Frau Hitler disparaged the entire class that we would never fully speak German because we were learning another language later in life unlike Europeans who start earlier from kindergarten. We were glad that bitch was out. It had to be a generational thing among our two teachers.
