I just bought a telescope from my coworker. I got a great deal on it. Now I need to buy a star chart. Anyone here use a telescope? Any tips or recommendations for resources? The best star charts? ![](http://images.hayneedle.com/mgen/master:CELE244.jpg)

I did for awhile until I realized they were fake. If you zoom in enough with a good telescope, you can see the sockets where the "stars" are slotted in. It takes a lot of the fun out of it.

Have you noticed anything unusual about the stars in the last few years? Do tell Pick out a star, preferably low on the horizon next to a fixed landmark (a tree, a power pole, etc.) and stare at it for about ten to twenty seconds. Then tell me if it does anything unusual. If it doesn't do anything, there's no need to say anything to me, and I'll never mention it to you again.

I agree up in a very rural area with little light pollution. It was ideal for stargazing. On any clear night you could see a full sky of stars, the milky way, dozens of meteors, and even artificial satellites. My dad bought a fairly high powered telescope that we used to see the rings of Saturn. In the early 2000's I bought a cheap telescope (I think at a supermarket) and took it out to a remote rest area to view Mars as it was making a close pass to Earth. It looked like a little red pebble.
