I thought it was cheesy fun.

It's weird because I was ten years old when Congo came out, I had seen Jurassic Park in theaters about ten times and had probably worn out my VHS copy of the movie by 1995, I remember seeing trailers for Congo, I remember having Congo action figures, but I still have never seen Congo. I guess it just wasn't a movie that demanded the eyes of children like Jurassic Park, Batman Forever, Twister and Independence Day did. There were other movies for pre-pubescent boys in the early to mid nineties, but those were the four that really made an impact.

After probing my gray cells further on the matter, they should have waited until after Mighty Joe Young;remember that? The ape effects in that one still hold up. Even the CGI for the chase scenes isn’t half bad for 1998.

It's been so long since I've seen it that I can't even remember it very well. I'll have to check it out again. I do remember the ridicule it got when first released.

I love Congo. The cast looks like it's just having a ball in that movie. And who doesn't love Ernie Hudson's "I happen to be black" line?

So, I’m reading Michael Crichton’s original book, which I found on a library’s giving-away-free shelf, and… Heh, all I’ll say is that it’s given me even more respect for the movie, particularly for John Patrick Shanley’s screenplay. And I usually enjoy Crichton, but here the pace is just too meandering, the ’notes for the curious’ too intrusive, and the characters too flat; in the movie, Shanley improves on all of that.
To be fair, Congo’s screenplay is far from perfect, though I suspect some of the more egregious mistakes (multiple pointless characters, a weak ending) are the result of post-production meddling.
On cutting the fat while remaining faithful to the core narrative, though, it’s actually one of the best book-to-screenplay adaptations I know. (Another that comes to mind is Anthony Shaffer’s screenplay for Death on the Nile [1978].)
Also, Shanley deserves full credit for inventing Tim Curry’s hilarious Herkermer Homolka, though I’m not sure who came up with the brilliant idea of playing the role as Peter Lorre (performance, not accent). And for making the “great white hunter” black.

Perhaps if they waited a few more years, they could had done a mixture of CGI and practical effects like that remake of Mighty Joe Young. For 1998, the cgi is passable but that suit and the animatronics are astonishing.

Well I decided to check out Congo again since it's currently streaming on Prime, and really wasn't too impressed with it. Wasn't completely terrible but not really all that good either. The story was clunky, didn't care for some of the characters, attempts at humor fall flat, and much of it was campy.

No. I didn't see it in theaters and I held off buying the DVD for over a decade because I hated the cover that is in your post. One day on a trip to Walmart I saw it for $5 and one of the copies had this cover. So I bought it, watched it and liked it. I rewatch it 2-3 times a year. All of the main and side actors are fun to watch and I like how sweet Amy is. "Go away! Ugly gorillas, ugly!" I like it better than JP3.

I've certainly seen worse.

If I didn't know the movie existed, I'd think you made that cover yourself. It's a true to life representation of a thread you'd see on this board. "Cast a 1995 film version of the Crichton novel 'Congo,' and design a cover for the DVD."

I liked it. In addition to the story, I remembering liking the score and the cinematography. And Tim Curry was an almost likable slimeball.

Every time I watch it, it's boatloads of fun. I believe it was Ebert who said it was a throwback to classic jungle adventure movies.

Bad but entertaining, like Tim Curry's accent. A bit of trivia. His character's name Herkermer Homolka was the inspiration for Cousin Fatso Fizzo's trademark annoying laugh: hurkahurkahurk! and the ahurk! variant.
And now you know.
