nas is one of my favorites. i own his fight collection. never gets the recognition he deserves. he really blew up weight wise. apparently (correct me if i'm wrong) he had bone deficiencies in his hands and he really could never come back from it. i don't think a lot of people realize how close the barrera fight was. a lot of people just act like he get whooped and finally shut up - yes - he lost - but i think it was a lot closer than people think. used to love watching ricky hatton. sad story. never seemed the same after the mayweather loss just like nas after barrera. was a sad clip of him youtube completely bloated snorting some 'c' years back. don't know if it's been taken down or not i have a sense of compassion for guys like this. yes they had their fame - but once everything is gone - if they weren't smart with their money and the leeches and hangers on are gone (tyson's life comes to mind) - where do they go/do? don't know much about their personal lives - but here's hoping they're happy today Yeah, Naz cited the hand injury as the reason for retiring. There is also an interesting interview he did with Sky on the Barrera fight (I think it is on youtube), he says he took the fight really late and he had to do it because he was contracted by an American cable network to take it (I think HBO), so he had to lose an enormous amount of weight at the last minute, and the day before the fight he couldn't even stand up he was so exhausted. It might not be a popular view, but I think he was the most talented fighter this country has ever produced. I remember my next door neighbours mum, before he was even that big, used to always tell me "he's too arrogant", but my response was always "but he's gonna be a winner, haven't we had enough of losers like Frank Bruno yet?". I suppose as long as everyone has an opinion on you one way or the other, you're gonna make money in boxing. My opinion of him as a person though is pretty low compared to my opinion of him as a boxer. Sad about Ricky Hatton, he was always putting on a lot of weight between fights so it was bound to catch up with him eventually, he's been in the tabloids because of his drug problems, I don't think I've seen the video, certainly read about some of his exploits. I guess it is hard to replace boxing for some when you quit, I think he is doing some small promotions and coaching now, so hopefully he is getting his life together. i had read about the vehichle incident with Nas and knew he spent time in jail. how the mighty fall. he had such a unique unorthodox style. awkward cat like quickness and always seemed unbalanced but yet surprisingly had power. i remember his first fight in the States against Kevin Kelley - great theater. that is what boxing is missing today in my eyes. personalities - the hector camachos, vinny pazienzas of the world.......

The car incident was a bad one. Reckless driving, you have to go to prison after what he did. He did an interview with iFL (a boxing youtube channel) about a year ago, he's still a bit cocky, he said Mayweather is the best of all time BUT he's lucky he never had to fight me. That would have been some fight!

Arturo Gatti now that would have been great theater. gatti is one of my favorites too - ashame what Money and De La Hoya did to him - sometimes heart just can't beat skill in life..... fascinating story about gatti too and his death - i.e. was it a suicide or did his wife have anything to do with it. there's a 48 hours or Dateline ID or 20/20 out there where they do a piece on it. fascinating. troubled soul. rip.

Gatti fought Mayweather quite late though in his career. I'll see if I can find the doc! I think the Prince actually said relatively early in his career that he wanted to fight De La Hoya most. It is somewhere in this video, I was watching it a few weeks ago

Yeah Oscar was involved in a lot of great fights, his amateur record is superb too. He's had some drug problems after retirement too I think, but he was looking great last time I saw him.

He's had some drug problems after retirement too I think, but he was looking great last time I saw him. yep. went into rehab. there was also that whole 'drag' ordeal of him dressing in womens clothes. cleaned himself up - great promoter now. truly think he needs to be considered one of the best of all-time - i get he's in the Hall but you never hear his name brought up when boxing fans are talking about the greatest ever. i get chavez was on his way out - if memory serves was the first fight controversial - stopped with a head butt and ODLH won on points? But the 2nd fight - didn't he just completely carve up the mexican legend and icon? and his fight against Fernando Vargas was so epic and personal. he was pretty much fighting for pride - war. terrific fight. i hated seeing him on his stool a shell of his former self against Pac pretty much giving up. Old broken down warrior. he took the fight thinking it was his last and he'd out with his head high. i never even heard of Pac at the time - just that he was a 'good' 'respectable' fighter.

Yeah, he wasn't really a huge draw over here. A bit like Holyfield before he fought Tyson and Lewis, the trouble was with most his fights being in Las Vegas you had to stay up till 5am to watch them, and plus I don't think he fought any British guys, they were all free to watch (or not PPV anyway) except for I think the Mayweather fight, so only really the hardcore fans were going to watch him or watch the repeat the next day. Would have been easier to sell him over here if he had fought a British fighter, but that's just the way things work out. Seems to be doing well with Golden Boy Promotions.

Saul Canelo Alvrez. I say him because of the huge Mexican population of fans.

Re: The UFC not being international...
In March they held events in the U.K., Brazil and Canada. They've been to South Korea, Ireland, Mexico, Croatia, Netherlands, Australia, Philippines, and New Jersey which is kind've its own little third world country within the US. I'm sure there's a few more places I can't name off the top of my head. It's obviously not international on the level of boxing or lots of other sports, but to say it's only a US-based promotion is ignorant.

You can't say Mayweather or Mike Tyson, because they have retired. The British press are saying it is Anthony Joshua now, and he is set to become the wealthiest of all time. I'm a little bit sceptical about this, who do you think, if you are not a boxing fan then even better... Bear in mind fame extends beyond casual fans. So the "most famous" probably is Tyson or Ali. Out of current boxers, I don't follow the sport and I couldn't name you a single name. Never heard of this Joshua guy.
