Just finished this yesterday, and cannot understand the high praise for this over-blown book that, to me, couldn't settle on whether it was historical fiction, horror or fantasy, and was based on the Franklin Expedition. Mr. Simmons rambles on and on, and would have benefited greatly from heavy-duty editing. Maybe I'm missing something, but after slogging my way through this (admittedly the last 100 or so pages were at least interesting), was hoping for a payoff. Nope. Didn't happen.

It was so slow that I gave up around the middle. I wonder whether the tv series is any better.

I would recommend listening to the unabridged audiobook read by Simon Vance. The book certainly lumbers along but he really brings it alive. Best audiobook I've heard.

I haven't read the book, but the TV series was very good, in my opinion.
