January 30th of 1979, a Boeing 707 Cargo owned by Varig (Brazilian airlines) disappeared in the middle of Pacific Ocean 30 minutes after leaving Tokyo. There was only 6 people in that flight, but also, 53 paints of Manabu Mabe, a brazilian painter. At the time, his paintings worth about 1 million dollars.
The flight crew consisted of Captain Gilberto Araújo da Silva, (49), First Officer Erni Peixoto Mylius, (45), Second Officers Antonio Brasileiro da Silva Neto, (39), Evan Braga Saunders, 37, and Flight Engineers José Severino Gusmão de Araújo, (42), and Nicola Exposito, (40). In 1973, Captain Araújo da Silva was in charge of flight 820, a Boeing 707 carrying 134 people which crash-landed near Orly Airport, in Paris, with 123 fatalities. In 1979, at the time of disappearance, he had more than 23,000 hours logged.
The cargo aircraft, operated by Varig, lost radio contact 30 minutes after takeoff, about 200 km (120 mi) of Tokyo. The disappearance was noticed by the flight controllers after the lack of communication in the passage of the Varig 967 over one of the imaginary fixed points over the ocean, used in navigation and monitoring of flight progress. After an hour of unsuccessful attempts to establish any communication, the alarm was given and search and rescue teams were called. With the reigning darkness, the searches were suspended and were not returned more than twelve hours after the takeoff, in the morning of the following day.
To this date, no signs of debries, parts and/or body of the crew have been found. Despite more than eight days of intense search at sea, no sign of debris, oil stains or the bodies of the crew was ever found.
There are a lot of conspiracy theories about this flight. My favorite is that aliens abducted the airplane to Mars hahaha. Seriosly now, a kidnapping promoted by art collectors would have occurred, since in the basement were the works of the painter Manabu Mabe. However, these paintings were never found anywhere.
The second one, is that the Boeing was reportedly shot down by Soviets, who were interested in hiding secrets from the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 fighter jet from deserter Viktor Belenko, who was reportedly dismantled and taken to the United States in the plane's cargo hold.
The last report of Varig:
"It was not possible to find any evidence that would shed any light on the causes of the disappearance of the aircraft".
Unfortunatelly, family members of the crew couldnt make a funeral, since no body was ever found.
