As usual I only find out about these things after they already go off the air… Mystery Show was a podcast from Gimlet Media, hosted by ex- This American Life personality Starlee Kine, about small, personal unsolved mysteries. Unfortunately, it only lasted one season (Apr.-Jul. 2015), but it was highly rated. After listening to an episode, I can see why: Kine has that somewhat bland public radio register to her voice, but she’s an engaging host, and the mysteries are puzzling and bizarre, lighting up the mind with possibilities. In the first episode (the one to which I listened), for example, a woman tells the story of going to a video store in the early 2000s. She went to return the movie the next day—and the store wasn’t there. The clues are delightful, maddening: Madonna, disappearing posters, a three-fingered man. The solution isn’t especially satisfying because, well, this is real life, not a book, but her story feels spooky and magical, fantasy breaking into the everyday—a vibe only helped by the loose ends still remaining at the end. Will listen to more, but the whole run is available for free here. Recommended.

Unfortunately, the second episode, “Britney,” is a complete disappointment. The actual hook isn’t too bad—why is celebrity Britney Spears holding a book that hardly sold a single copy?—but the book’s author is so obsessive a Spears fan that it becomes creepy, and worse the mystery never gets answered. Reading reviews, people more enjoyed host Starlee Kine’s cheer-up talk with a customer service rep than the mystery, but Kine’s advice is standard self-help blather that isn’t really going to help the guy.
Ugh. Maybe I gave out that recommendation too quickly. I will say, however, that the episode somehow made me more creeped out about celebrity/paparazzi culture than I already was.
