...and while I'll never do it again! I finally got the opportunity to do it when there were two loaves available to purchase. When I thawed out the frozen bread, and was able to use it, it was dreadful. It was hard and very dry. Very dry. Very hard. I'm putting an order together now for more groceries to pick up on Saturday (I only do curbside pickup given the whole covid thing, as I avoid going into stores as much as I can). I really like this particular brand because they offer THIN sliced bread, which is extremely hard to find. I think most bread is sliced much too thick, where one slice of the "regular" bread can often be twice as many calories. I don't want to eat a bread sandwich. That's why it's also hard to find and is often out of stock. It's multi-grain and thin sliced. Love it! Hopefully it'll be in stock Saturday. I won't freeze bread ever again.

Huh. Catman has always had good experiences with frozen bread products. But then he thaws out only a few slices at a time, no more than he will use during the coming day.

autumn, I freeze bread all the time... been doing it for years. The trick is to wrap it several times in plastic bags. This will keep it from drying out or getting freezer burn. Sometimes I even refrigerate bread that way, if I know I'm going to use it within a few weeks or so. But as far as freezing, I've left wrapped loaves in there for several months, and never had a problem with it.

Sure it helps keep bread for an extra 11hrs probably... without any taste. Besides, we were 4 ppl... why the need to throw bread in the freezer for every day use.

The mini-department store which I frequent will often have the bread that I use as 2 for $5.00, or, if I'm lucky, 3 for $6.00.
Of course, when I buy it at 2 for $5.00, the next week, it is on sale for 3 for $6.00. Usually the way it happens.
Since a loaf does me a good 2 weeks (best before date is usually about 2.5 weeks when I buy it), I freeze any other loaves I buy.
There have been times where I didn't check the tag for the best before date. So, the loaf that I take out is actually not the oldest. By the time, I take the oldest out, it has gone rock hard.
Only been a couple of times where that has happened, though.

It wasn't in there long enough to get freezer burn. I figured being in there for such a short amount of time, I'd be pretty good to go. I thought I'd only run into problem if it was in there for maybe a month or more. This surprised me.

I don't freeze bread, but simply put it in the normal non-freeze area of the fridge. Keeps for at least three weeks without a stain of blue mould or drying out. As long as it's wrapped as air-tight as possible I have no problems. That said I always buy the same brand of bread. Maybe other brands react differently depending on texture.

autumnThe extra thinness and taking it all out at once may be key .... suggest you try again and only take out what you want for a day or so. If it doesn't work, there's always bread pudding for dessert ! I have never had a problem with dryness after freezing ... some of the "cotton breads" tend more to sogginess.

The bread I eat is super thin sliced and multi-grained, when you bite into it, you can chew bits of seeds and grains occasionally. Fresh bread, it's super soft, and almost as squishy as white bread. It's not hard like many multi-grain breads can be (some are like cardboard). I lucked out finding this bread. It's also organic, and there are no preservatives in it. I don't know if any of that makes a difference. When it came out, it was so tough. As far as taking out just what I need for the day, that would be the equivalent of what the first few slices would've been like, wouldn't it? And they were tough and hard and dry.

Sometimes we put unopened sliced bread in the freezer. As long as you thaw it out before eating it’s fine.

Of consideration could be how cold my freezer is, how much ice is in there (a LOT of ice. I like ice. Always have a lot of ice in the freezer). So maybe that creates an ultra-cold freezer making stuff more prone to freezer burn? I've had to toss out bags of frozen fruit for getting freezer burned after what seems a short period as well. I have the setting at a "medium" (not super cold) so I dunno…

I've frozen bread a few times. Sometimes it was fine when thawed, other times it wasn't. Kind of a flip of the coin thing.
