Years ago, I was channel-surfing and came across this movie scene: John Wayne is a naval officer on a ship and stops by the infirmary to visit a young sailor who's been seriously wounded. The sailor lost either one or both legs and was despondent. Wayne speaks to him briefly, then exits the room, leaving behind a gun; the scene implies that he's expecting the sailor to take the "honorable" way out by shooting himself, since he's no longer any good to the Navy because of his injury. A shot is heard from the room as Wayne walks down the hallway, satisfied that the kid has done the "right" thing. I thought this was one of the most repugnant movie scenes I'd come across and have disliked Wayne even more ever since. Does anyone know what this movie is? I may be a little off on the military branch; maybe it was the Army or Marines, but I seem to remember it was on a ship.

It reminds me of "The Sea Chase," but with some differences. Wayne plays the captain of a German merchant ship in Australia when WWII breaks out, and he makes a run back for Germany with an Australian destroyer chasing him. Along the way one of the German sailors is bitten by a shark and dying of gangrene, and he kills himself.
I'm looking for the suicide scene but haven't found it yet.

Thanks to you both. That must be the one (I'd hate to think there was more than one with such a scene).

Thanks to you both. That must be the one (I'd hate to think there was more than one with such a scene). a scene seen in context OFTEN does not mean the same as that same scene seen without context
Not liking a particular actor can also affect one's interpretation of an out of context scene or an entire film.

Not liking a particular actor can also affect one's interpretation of an out of context scene or an entire film. John Wayne was an actor, mostly playing good guys but occasionally playing bad guys. And he was a human being with good points and bad points like all of us. The Freemasons built him up as an American icon, and now they're tearing him down. I've never seen it, but I've heard he was good in "The Quiet Man." And I wonder if marianne48 knows that John Wayne never shot anyone in the back.
