I was about to take my mother to bathtub and the door bell rang. I assumed it was Purolator since I had ordered some ink cartridges. I left a signed document in the door. So someone rings the bell and we wait a moment-my mother was looking out the window and said no one wa there. I thought I heard a couple of faint knocks but forgot about it-went to the bathroom and
CRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So my firs thought was my mother fell but no and then I thought something fell off a table no and she said she saw some teenager with a knapsack leaving the house so I go downstairs and find the side door open the extra bolt for it is super flimsy and I always suspected something could happen like this. So, after checking to make sure no one was hiding inside I put stuff in front of the door to block it (and the back door) Anyway it is good it didnt happen when I was out.
Damage to door isn't much either just the frame, we need a better lock bolt. Strong incentive.

Anything missing? Here daylight smash and grabs are common. They ring. No one answers. they kick in the door or smash a window and grab something valuable they can carry. I hope your mom won't be scared to be alone prime I helped my mom stay in her home 10 years. I know what you are doing. Good job

And I think they left right after the door crashed open. Yeah she isn't normally afraid but then I hardly do leave the house--I always think about a break-in when I do. Thanks. I appreciate it.

I'm glad that no one got hurt. Things can be replaced, but your lives are precious.
Hope you're able to get a solid door frame and really good lock. It's really frightening to feel vulnerable in your own home.

My mom lived alone on a farm. Her nearest neighbor was 1/4 mile away. She was away one Sunday and burglars did their thing. It was a mess! They stole her jewelry, tv etc. Ironically they didn't find her money. But she insisted on staying in the house. I would have been afraid. (I helped her clean. Took hours. They even made sandwiches and warmed some left overs in the microwave. We had to throw away food because we weren't sure what they touched.) But what I really wanted to say was about once every other month someone came to her door asking if Mike Jones were there? Or where was Elm street they were lost. Etc. Burglars were casing the place. Scary stuff. She always answered the door. I'd be afraid. Again I admire you. I know. Bless you

I live in a rural area and I consider it rude for someone to visit unannounced. I'm also not going to just answer the door for anyone I don't know or expect. However, I do have a dog. If someone knocks and I don't answer, they'll hear the dog barking. I also have "DOG" signs posted.

I was worried they'd see an elderly woman and push their way in. A dog is helpful!

But what I really wanted to say was about once every other month someone came to her door asking if Mike Jones were there? Or where was Elm street they were lost. Etc. Yes that happened once some years ago. We had some neighbors for a time and I think the guy sold drugs--however I recall one time some teenagers came to the door and asked directions to the mall which seemed kind of weird to me. I assumed it was a code for them looking for the drug house--but might have been they wanted to see if anyone was home.
Looking after my mother can be quite stressful but I will keep doing it. In Canada family members don't count as caregivers so I can't get income from it, but we get by.

What the heck? Seriously, what the actual heck is that? What difference does that make? One is giving care, to a family member or not. All that does is encourage family to ship a disabled relative off to an expensive facility at the tax payers expense (like Medicaid or equivalent?), exhaust all their money forcing them into state run facilities? How about paying what they'd pay anyone else to provide care, knowing that if anything, the "patient" would be probably (hopefully, assuming it's not being abused) getting better care? What the heck?

It's one of those anomalies with Canada. Even the US allows you to take courses on nurse training for a relative and qualify.
