Goz, thanks for the reminder. I'd forgotten that I bought one Monday or Tuesday. I just checked, and it appears to be fine. It's 10 AM, here. I hope it'll still be good this evening.

Well, they are tricky little beasts and they lurk around being fine and then you cut them open and there are brown soggy tasteless spots everywhere, so beware the sneaky avo!

On a recent thread, somewhere - probably here - I posted that I've heard that you should be careful to buy them when they still have that little navel/stem "nib," attached. Once that has fallen off, they are headed on the "down side."
A poster who said his/her family grows avocados, agreed that that was correct.

They are never sold with that here no matter if they are rock solid or near ripe.

Mine last 3 weeks or more. Buy em hard at Costco. As each one gets at all soft (typically a little in the pointy end), it goes into the refrigerator drawer. When I use them, I cut them lengthwise without removing any section but the one I will use. Pit helps keep them from ripening, so that quarter is used last.

I love this however, how can any sane person eat avos in 'quarters'? I am a half or nothing kinda gal! ( and yes I put the extra half WITH pit and clingfilm into the fringe where it lasts a day if you are lucky.

Having a quarter right now with hummus on toast. Go on! I double dog dare you to eat the other quarter, as well! Sometimes I would, but I'll have it with Italian sausage in the morning. Down to 1 3/4 so have to buy some soon. I never run out of ripe ones.

Darn. Had the sausage with sliced fried potato, will wait till lunch. For me it's pears. Too hard, put them in the fridge or leave them out, doesn't matter. Too hard, too hard, next thing you know they are mealy soft. And I never seem to cut cantaloupe at the right time.
