What are you reading in May 2017?
Lately I've been continuing to re-read the book "Charlie Chaplin at Keystone & Essanay". Today I also read the liner notes of two DVDs in the "COI Collection" series ("Portrait of a People" and "Your Children and You"), I love it when DVDs include liner notes.

Finished, The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. This book is a great example of early Hemingway (1926) the descriptions are written in a very sparse manner, with just enough detail to give a room and a setting for these six main characters to do their stuff, lot's and lot's of drinking, bickering, partying, fooling around, little bit of fishing and acting completely despicable to one another at various times but they are so well drawn and the dialogues are so engrossing that you can't seem to get enough of it. Oh, and some classic writing on what it was like to go to Spain back in the 20's during fiesta time and bullfighting,  very interesting stuff there. You really have to be innately talented and gifted as a writer to have this ability create an almost completely character based novel like this and have the reader feel as if they are almost one of them, in a time and place. Good Stuff. also, took another dive into ' The Age of Faith' by Will Durant (over 1100 pages) just finished the Crusades at about page 620, another 200 plus pages down- so time for another break- will come back to it later-again (I will eventually finish and slay this monster). Waiting on a biography of Frank Sinatra, Reading T he Invisible Man by H.G. Wells (Short Novel, meaning to read for awhile, supposed to really be a study in psychology? ). Reading A History of Architecture by Spiro Kostof, was supposedly a very highly respected work when it was originally published in 1985 about 800 pages/1000 illustrations plus another 150 drawings. YUM! |

The girl before. Don't often read thrillers as I never really find them thrilling enough. This one is pretty good.

Carlo Ginzburg's Ecstasies, a study of the witch trials in early modern Europe. Yes, a very strange subject, but one in which I've been interested ever since reading thrillers by Dennis Wheatley and John Dickson Carr and Margaret Murray's largely debunked scholarly work on the subject, The God of the Witches. Ginzburg's study, which tries to cut through the thriller-y stuff and get to the facts of the cases, is very interesting. A nice complement to studies I've done on France's " Affair of the Poisons," which remains one of the most interesting areas in history, in my opinion. |

Picked up a couple of paperbacks at a used book store; The Fan Club by Irving Wallace and Black Dahlia by James Ellroy. I've never read a book by Ellroy before, so I'm looking forward to this one.

I actually had not. We watched the movie in a sociology class in high school but that was it.
It wasn't until a few months back that I actually picked up a copy. I thought it was a great read. Enjoyed every page.
