Under the Tree (2017) dir: Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson Black comedy (or is it?) set in a Reykjavík suburb. A dispute about one couple's tree overshadowing their neighbours' patio degenerates into a final bloodbath. Well acted all-round but Edda Björgvinsdóttir is outstanding.

Thanks so much for the post. I think I like The Man Who Planted Trees better, but this is a beauty, too.

In Staten Island 2009 dir: James DeMonaco, small-time mob boss Parmie Tarzo (Vincent D'Onofrio) has a mental breakdown when his gang conspire against him and his beloved mother dies. He climbs a tree in a local park scheduled for development and conducts a one-man sit-in protest. This is just one thread in a weird film which combines domestic tenderness, compassion for the disabled, black comedy and brutal gore. I have no idea how to pigeon-hole this one, but the late Seymour Cassel steals the show.

Proshchanie , Farewell (1983) Matyora is a small village on a beautiful island with the same name. The tranquil existence of the village is threatened with flooding by the proposed construction of a dam for hydro electricity. Sitting centrally in the village and symbolically in the story is an ancient tree.... Tragically while scouting locations in June 1979, original director & writer Larisa Shepitko died in a car accident along with four members of her shooting team. Her ecological fable based on a true story was finally completed in 1981 by her mourning husband Soviet director Elem Klimov , an outstanding film...
