Down-to-earth Ron Kirby (Rock Hudson) is an arborist and he has a tree nursery in All That heaven Allows (1955) Dir. Douglas Sirk. A budding romance begins with Ron up the tree. .... Proudly showing his nursery trees ...

Salomy Jane (1914) Dir. William Nigh and Lucius Henderson was filmed om location amongst California's giant Redwood forests, where some of the largest and tallest trees in the world grow. The entertaining back-woods drama opens with an impressive panning shot the full length of a giant redwood tree... The only surviving film of Beatriz Michelena... as Salomy Jane and giant tree.
A lovely shot, a romantic tree framed finale....

First thing I thought of when I saw "tree" as a theme was the 1927 silent called The Kid Brother. It includes some great camera work as Harold Lloyd's character climbs a tree in order to ask Jobyna Ralston's character her name and whatnot. He soon falls and hits many branches on the way down, but I think this is a great scene in cinema.

Paix sur les champs, Peace Over the Fields (1970) Dir. Jacques Boigelot. Fierce resentment still burns in the close-knit community twenty years after an acquittal of murder. An absorbing drama exploring issues of prejudice and superstition in the Belgian countryside, the first Belgian film ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film. The film opens up a tree, and follows with the credit roll under a leafy canopy..... With foot spikes and a harness Louis cuts dead limbs for firewood...

In A Thousand Words (2013) dir: Brian Robbins, Eddie Murphy plays a smartass motormouth who falls foul of a guru. Murphy is gifted a tree in his garden with 1000 leaves. One will fall with every word he utters, and when the tree is bare, Murphy will die. Humor derives from his attempts to navigate his selfish, manipulative life without speaking. But he could have avoided most pitfalls by carrying a pencil and notepad to communicate (or even a smartphone). Saccharin ending. The Eddie Murphy of 24 Hours and Beverley Hills Cop was a fresh breeze. But since, more like a stale fart. Ever since Bogart and Cagney, edgy characters have tried to re-invent themselves as lovable. (Not something I have ever attempted).

A sacred tree plays a big part in tribal life for Mongols, and young Temujin is inspired by one on his journey to become Genghis Khan (Great King). Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan (2007) benefits from the excellent direction of Sergei Bodrov. (Apologies for the picture short-changing us arboreally.)

The dead Tree of Gondor is symbolically significant in The Lord of the Rings.

Ok, OK, I know that, botanically, bean-stalks are not trees, but when one grows to this size surely I can sneak it in? Culturally this story is in the world-wide tradition of the World Tree which links Earth and the heavens. I watched this with my infant daughter, and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I now see that the movie had a competent director in Bryan Singer, rather than one of the usual suspects, which might explain why. Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

Capt. Yosarian (Alan Arkin) has had enough of war so strips off his uniform and climbs a tree. From "Catch-22" (1970).

VERTIGO "Vertigo" is one of the most important films in the development of my life of film movie going. I should have got this one. Thanks.
