For once I've seen both movies. I prefer Arrival. It has a more interesting premise than the other film with stranger aliens, action taking place in more than one country and a twist that makes the latter part of the movie very interesting, at least for me. The Arrival is a good movie too though and if you're looking for a more straightforward movie with high stakes and a conspiratorial plot then you might prefer that film.

I like Arrival.
It did have interesting aliens and some pretty heady philosophical issues, too.

Arrival (2016)
for the record... I don't think I have seen The Arrival (1996) from start to finish but I am pretty sure I caught a little bit or piece of it on TV years ago. but all-in-all, I would not expect my opinion to change.

SciFiveI like Arrival, but it's nothing special for me. I gave it a 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up). I have seen Arrival (2016) twice so far (Jan 2017/Sep 2018). or I could say this to pretty much sums up things in the big picture for me in terms of scores... 6/10 or higher (my minimum score for a Thumbs Up(since this is the lowest score for me that's worth re-watching here and there)) = about 21% of everything I have seen. or it's like saying only 1 out of every 5 movies I have seen over the long term is worth re-watching here and there as the years pass. but I guess another way of looking at that 6/10 score is like saying it's better than at least 79% of everything I have seen. 6-6.5/10 (movies just shy of favorite movie status) = 34 movies. 7/10 or higher (my favorite movies) = 157 movies (or only 6.8% of everything I have seen. I have seen 2,300+ total movies.) so with that info... it puts into perspective on what I think of Arrival (2016). because most of what I have seen is pretty average (i.e. 5/10) as most of what I seen is decent enough not to have wasted my time but at the end of the day is not worth re-watching and like I always say, a movies true worth is whether I want to re-watch it here and there as the years pass or not. it's what determines my very basic Thumbs Down vs Thumbs Up... 5/10 or less = Thumbs Down (won't re-watch(with rare exception)). 6/10 or higher = Thumbs Up (will re-watch).

SciFiveYeah, but it's simply all about my all around enjoyment of a movie is how I rate it as some people think my rating system is all complicated but it's really not. it's just not that many movies stand out and my ratings tend to reflect this. I never have restrictions on ratings either as my percentages are just the way things happened to play out for me. but from what I can tell when people bring up their rating systems around here, it seems most are in the ball park of mine as even though some might use different wording, like for their description of what each 1 through 10 score means, I can tell they are pretty much the same or quite similar. like to show you what I mean... 10 = As much as I can enjoy a movie. 9 = Nearly as much as I can enjoy a movie. 8 = Well Above Average. 7 = Above Average. (My Favorite Movies begin here) 6 = Slightly Above Average. (My minimum score to re-watch a movie) 5 = Average (Thumbs Down) (while ultimately a negative score, they typically don't waste my time) 4 = Below Average. 3 = Failure. (I generally finished watching these but they are just bad) 2 = Boring. (I could not finish watching due to boredom and boring is pretty much the worst crime a movie can commit) 1 = Greatly Dislike. (very little I have seen is THIS bad) but with that said... it does seem some people are a little too generous with their scores and fairly routinely hand out fairly high scores (i.e. 7-8/10 and higher) where as I think I make much better use of the rating system. but prior to I think it was Sep 2014 my system was a bit skewed in that instead of how I do it now with the split point of Thumbs Up vs Thumbs Down being 6/10(thumbs up) and 5/10(thumbs down), it was 7/10(thumbs up) and 6/10(thumbs down) which was skewed as too many movies where bunched into the 7/10 score even though some where a decent amount more enjoyable than others etc. but after that tweak, it's about as good of a system one can get since average is the center of the 1 through 10 rating scale and things scale up and down fairly evenly from there. because with my current system one simply can't vary much either way of it before their system will start to become flawed as this is not to praise myself, just simple reasoning for someone who wants to make proper use of a 1 through 10 rating scale. plus, I feel after a while one can tell what truly stands out for the viewer vs what does not and I rate accordingly. but I could understand say a younger person who's just getting into movies might have a more difficult time judging stuff since they don't have nearly as much to compare it to. but after a while you start to see the true gems vs just another movie sort of thing etc. but with all of that said... what movies stand out and what does not will obviously vary from person to person. but in terms of the basic core rating system, what I am using is a solid foundation and pretty well thought out. sorry for the novel

I recall 'The Arrival' as being a pretty fun, popcorn flick -- possibly underappreciated, although I haven't watched it since it was in theaters. 'Arrival' had interesting concepts of aliens and alien language, but other than that was just a string of distracting blockbuster/sci-fi movie cliches. I think the '96 movie was better for what it was, even if lacking the aspirations of the the 2016 movie.

I haven’t seen The Arrival, but I’ve been interested in it for a while.
Arrival is a great movie, but I haven’t seen it since just after it released. Love the use of Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight” near the end.

The Arrival (1996) is a fun B-movie.
I've finally gotten around to watching Arrival (2016) and must say I'm not impressed. It has some of the dullest cinematography I've experienced in recent times, the great cast is largely wasted, Whitaker and Stuhlbarg have almost nothing interesting to do and the fascinating concept is presented in such a flat and boring way that it almost put me to sleep.

The one that's actually entertaining i.e. The Arrival.
Arrival was typical dull pretentious crap.

How does it stack up The Departed?
Or The Terminal for that matter?
