Doing two at a time, so who do I pair with the duke? Well, I picked the guy who killed him and got killed by him (well Kirk and the Duke shot two guys, and he was one).
Now, obviously, I can't include every film. As usual, I try to get a good cross section, include early and late films, a few "walk on" types, and of course the famous ones. I know I will exclude some that people like, but I want to have a variety here.
This is the duke we're doing here, so instead of the usual 8, I suppose I better allow 10 picks. Not that he was better, but he made "more" of the better movies, or better known movies.

Oh well, I haven't seen ten of those. I thought he was actually better at playing the villain than the hero (Red River, The Searchers). Rio Bravo is my favourite of his "duke" John Wayne performances.

I've seen all of them, chose only 5, and why wasn't The Shootest included?

The Longest Day - co-starring amongst all star cast, film is tremendous. Hatari! - highly entertaining comedy/adventure. Donovan's Reef - his last pairing with John Ford, light fare. Island in the Sky - probably his most moving role. The Searchers - what's more to say. Stagecoach - opened the gates for he & the genre both.

A good list. My favorite is "Rio Bravo", but I love 'The Quiet Man" and "Rio Grande" as well.

Well, this is the first of your polls which I haven't been able to choose a single one...Never thought much of his acting abilities...

The Searchers. Seen more of his movies than any other major star, actor or actress.

Never thought much of his acting abilities... Obviously you have never seen The Conqueror (1956).

I voted for TEN - difficult to choose.
Will mention The Quiet Man, Hondo, Rio Bravo, and Red River as particular forever favorites.
A missing addition would be The High and The Mighty.

The Quiet Man 4. The Shootist 5. El Dorado And yes, I have see The Searchers.

Not too big a surprise are the first and second place finishers. THE SEARCHERS wins, with Liberty Valence second. A huge surprise in third with RIO BRAVO, a fun film, but a big surprise to be third.

I have only seen three movies with John Wayne and based on what i have seen it's not looking good for Wayne as two out of three score badly...
-The Quiet Man (1952) - 5/10 (Thumbs Down. watchable but forgettable) -True Grit (1969) - 4/10 (below average) -The Searchers (1956) - 2/10 (could not finish it due to boredom and killed it 30min into the movie)
i sure hope he's got something decent as i am just hoping i happened to hit a couple of weak movies as i am not going to write him off yet but if a couple more of his Westerns fail to output at least a 6/10, as i think Westerns are capable of being great, i probably won't be in a rush to see more of his movies.
