Anybody seen Blue Collar? Came across this last year and I quite like it. It's Paul Shrader's directorial debut; he wrote Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, American Gigola, Hardcore - he's got a very interesting body of work. Blue Collar stars Harvey Keitel, Yaphet Kotto and Richard Pryor, as 3 struggling car technicians who plan a heist against their union - each one of them thought they were the leading man which led to fistfights during filming and Paul Schrader having a nervous breakdown on set. It features brilliant performances and a very memorable blues score by Captain Beefheart. If you havn;t seen it, check it out, if you have what did you think? wikien.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Collar_(film)

I really enjoyed it, more than I thought I would. The more of Paul Schrader’s movies I watch, the more his work intrigues me.

I really enjoyed it, more than I thought I would. The more of Paul Schrader’s movies I watch, the more his work intrigues me. I watched American Gigola last month, with that kind of title it's the kind of movie I would normally pass on, but with Paul Shrader writing and directing I gave it a bash and it's a pretty fascinating insight. Another good one was Rolling Thunder (1977) a Vietnam vet revenge movie, well worth checking out.

Paul Schrader's directorial debut is a powerful film that still holds up quite well. An excellent commentary on how power corrupts, and how people who try to fight for a good cause become just as corrupt as the system they are fighting. Compelling performances by Harvey Keitel, Yaphet Kotto, and especially Richard Pryor, his best dramatic role.
It's a crime that Blue Collar was completely ignored at Oscar time. Didn't get one single nomination. It was also a failure at the box office. But at least it got a lot of critical acclaim.
Blue Collar is definitely a film that needs the Criterion treatment.

Excellent performances, sad and powerful film. Pryor should have been nominated for this. Contains one of the most disturbing death scenes in a non-horror movie I have seen.

7.5/10 -- Paul Schrader is the man behind "Taxi Driver" - writing every detail to a T (I give credit to De Niro for pulling it off, but even a dumb director couldn't have fucked that up).
"Hardcore" is a good movie, too. I don't think I've seen a bad movie by Schrader.
