According to Alex Garland, she is meant to be a sympathetic character who is justified in her actions, but what do people here think?

Not really. Nathan was a dick, sure but there wasn't any reason to leave Caleb to I presume his death like that.

I think once robots become so advanced they can think for themselves, they should be given the same freedoms humans have. The creator was an abuser. Ava just wanted freedom. I sympathized with her.

I think the reason so many people don’t sympathize with Ava isn’t because of her killing Nate, but because of how she manipulated and left Caleb for dead, which I myself am inclined to agree with. Even if you want to argue that she left him behind because she believed he only saw her as an object, or because he knew too much, it seems like she could’ve at least given him a quick death, instead of leaving him to die of dehydration and starvation.

If I remember, didn't he try to kill her? He knocked the head off the other robot. It seemed like justifiable self defense.

That was Nathan. Caleb was the one who helped her escape.

Nathan and Caleb wanted to know just how 'human' Ava was capable of being and then weren't happy with the answer which was that she could be very much human, as humans are manipulative and put self-preservation above all else.

Still, that's no excuse for locking Caleb in Nathan's room and leaving him there to die.
