we had Toy Story, which of course is a classic and paved the way for computer animation
we also had Babe, which is a wonderful, heartwarming movie that deservedly got a nomination for Best Picture
we also A Goofy Movie, which is an excellent father son relationship/teen angst movie. Way better movie than that it could have been (they easily could have just went "episode of Goof Troop blown up for the big screen) β we also had Casper, Jumanji, and Balto. All of which are pretty well made and fondly remembered. Wonderful James Horner scores for each as well. β probably the weakest of the lost is Pocahontas, which has been railed against for its historic insensitivity. But it still has its fans.

Pocahontas is my second favorite of the bunch.
I don't care about the historical insensitivity. It has beautiful animation, excellent songs and good performances.

I fully agree, and I'll add 1998 and 1999 has great years for family films. 1998 had Mulan, A Bug's Life, The Prince of Egypt, Antz, Babe: Pig in the City, and The Rugrats Movie. 1999 had Toy Story 2, Tarzan, The Iron Giant, Stuart Little, and The Straight Story. EDIT: By the way, I saw you post this same thread on Reddit.

There was also Alfonso Cuaron's A Little Princess. I'm not very fond of it, but I know others are.
And Heavyweights is a cult classic.
Anyone remember Tom and Huck, It Takes Two, and A Kid in King Arthur's Court? These movies probably stink, but I enjoyed them as a kid.

I think there was a perfect pendulum swing between 1982 -1999 of family films. They were the right blend of family oriented, a pinch of darkness, slight vulgarity to push the edginess and always great messages.
The acting and direction was taken seriously.
The problem in the 2000s is they started dumbing up the kids/family movies. Honestly, they stopped making family films. It was either a βkidsβ movie or an adult movie. Family movies were just dumbed down kiddie flicks.
3D, CGI cartoons were the only thing trying to put some adult humor like βShrekβ or whatever.
