The first one was more or less the template for "Toy Story", though "The Christmas Toy" was also a huge influence (in fact that one was probably blatant plagiarism).

Apparently they loved it at Sundance but the director Jerry Rees said that the officials didn't want to risk losing prestige over nominating an animated film at their awards ceremony.

I remember thinking it was ok, but it's hard to ignore the similarities/plagiarism. Both movies revolve around a jealous toy being dethroned as the owner's favorite by an outer space them action figure that doesn't realize it's a toy.
