If I remember correctly wasn't Nosferatu made because the creators couldn't get the rights for Dracula?

Not so much couldn’t get the rights as they decided to make a version without thinking of getting Mrs Florence Stoker’s consent.
Wasn’t the first. The Wallace family sued Kaleb studios for making a one reeler of Ben-Hur in 1907, winning the case and setting a precedent for copyright infringement.

Wasn't there some weird copyright issue with first Evil Dead film? The studio owned the rights, not Raimi, that's why Evil Dead 2 is essentially more of a reboot than a direct sequel?

That's why Raimi couldn't use any footage from the first film and had to film fresh scenes to serve as the prologue at the beginning of Evil Dead 2 (deliberately simplifying the narrative by omitting the other members of the group in the process). |

Kevin McClory has the rights to THUNDERBALL and had tried to make a James Bond film separate from the EON films. Hence NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. I remember back in 1999 rumors of a separate Bond adaptation with Liam Neeson.

I've heard complaints about The Lion King being a ripoff of "Kimba the White Lion" but I would have to look more into it.

The infamous Ed Wood film "Glen or Glenda" was suppose to be about the first sex reassignment surgery, but the studio couldn't get the rights, so it became a very bizarre "art film" of sorts loosely based on the actual story.

If I recall correctly Night Of The Living Dead fell into public domain because the filmmakers forgot to copyright it.
