In your opinion? I say no.

As soon as I saw the thread title, I knew who posted it.
And I knew what you'd say.

I think he's good enough. He's gotta have some talent to stay around for so long.

Yes, though I often prefer cover versions:

You can like or hate his voice but if you don't rate his songwriting ability then you really don't know much about music.

Zos is correct there, you dont know much about music. Disliking something only says someting about your taste, not about its quality. You havent even made any arguments. Sara is a briliantly constructed and despicable piece of emotional blackmail, going the gamut of memories of the children and good times to a subtle blaming of her for their breakup. Ballad of a Thin Man takes apart possibly journalists or just one for intruding on Dylans life. Wicked Messenger tells his fans he no longer wants to be known as a protest singer or singer for his generation. Dylans songs are full of subtle and not so subtle meaning.

Yes, though I often prefer cover versions: Ah yes of course that reminds me, jimi hendrix. One songwriter that is way better than dylan. Actually his singing voice was what i prefer over his songwriting though. Both of those thing he did way better than dylan. Jimi was the man! Dylan is, eh?

You talk about knowing music, then follow it up with stories. And rightly so, given that Dylan is more of a poet than a songwriter. At any rate, your post only says something about the lyrics, not about the music.

At any rate, your post only says something about the lyrics, not about the music. I know little about music theory. However I think a lot, and when I listen to music I think about what it is doing. I also close my eyes and let the music take me where the musician wants to go. Yes, Dylan is a master at weaving words. And many of his songs grab you with their message and take you to places where the lyrics want you to go, with their rhythm and musicality. Again listen to Sara. The long wails of pain as he lays into her for leaving him is IMO brilliant and nasty. Visions of Johanna has a dreamlike quality which transports you to the wealth of visions he hits you with. Tonight I'll be staying here with you is sweet and hopeful for a roll. Likewise Lay Lady Lay is hot with lust. That isn't just the words but the way the music matches the words to add emotional content. Try ranting about Katy Perry music like the above. Awww ain't she great, her latest got to number 1. I understand some of Dylans early songs had melodies taken from folk music but that is what songwriters. do.
