I think it looks fantastic!!! Mind you I never read the books,but ever since the trailers came out all I've been seeing is "that looks nothing like the book". Name one Stephen King movie that has followed the book 100%. Go ahead I'll wait. The closest I can think in terms of book faithfulness is the Langoliers, but that was a 3 hour mini series. I agree, there's no reason to follow the book 100%. As has been posted in the other Dark Tower threads, this begins where the last book left off. And that's a good thing because it frees the viewer from having to expect this or that. Roland was trapped in a cycle, but now with the horn, he can change things. For the director, it also means he can take the best elements while adding his own imprint. For those who haven't read the books, it eliminates the fear that they must be familiar with the story to enjoy it. For those who have read them, the film should be interesting in the sense that they'll wonder how much Roland has escaped the cycle, if he is able to exercise his will to do what must be done, or if he is doomed to the same fate.
