I've always hated that movie despite being a fan of Ridley Scott. I always liked the look of Darkness and I like Mia Sara and most other Tom Cruise movies. I'm watching this is as a creative exercise in what went wrong and to see if I could improve it with my own fan edit. The first thing glaringly wrong is the goblin and pig face henchman masks look terrible in daylight and they appear weak and stupid as characters. A movie is only as strong as it's villains and they instantly ruin the movie. I can't do anything to fix this. Ridley seemed to be out of his element in the fantasy genre. It's a shame.

They are meant to be dumb henchmen.
I have never noticed the facial prosthetics looking fake.
I have mixed feelings about Legend and I am also a huge Ridley Scott fan, but the problems you raise aren't even problems for me.
The problem is the script is too thin and the human characters aren't interesting. The technical aspects of the film are great though and more or less make up for the script flaws.
You say Ridley Scott was out of his element here and I disagree with that completely. Legend is one of the greatest fantasy films from a purely atmospheric and visual aesthetics standpoint.
I slightly prefer the original theatrical cut, because I much prefer the Tangerine Dream score to Jerry Goldsmith's score.

Yes, I know they are meant to be dumb henchman, I hate that. You are right about the human characters, that was the second glaring flaw I noticed.

It has some similarities with KRULL, the woman and the giant monster chatting. I prefer Krull. I hate Tangerine Dream, and Cruise is a boring hero. Too many dwarves and fairies.
Darkness is not really much of a bad ass--he gets tricked so easily. One flaw with his costume-when he runs, his horns shake around--they should be fastened to his skull.
Was amazed to learn Robert Picardo was under all that makeup as the swamp witch.

That is the difference.

Krull was another disappointing 80s fantasy that had potential. The Glave weapon was awesome, though, and is the best part of Krull. The European cut of Legend has different music and it's a lot worse. At least Tangerine Dream provided some atmosphere.

They all try to top Hawk the Slayer but can't.
Just can't.

I surprisingly never seen that film. moviemouth summed up my thoughts. It’s downright gorgeous from a production design standpoint. But it’s chock full of stock characters. Tim Curry is the sole highlight and the makeup for his part is truly phenomenal.
